Billy Idol Records Album of Christmas Standards
Rock 103 Memphis ^ | November 23, 2006 | Staff

He croons songs including "Frosty the Snowman" on the festive CD 'Happy Holidays.'

Billy Idol has stunned his diehard fans by ditching his punk image to record an album of classic Christmas songs.

The rocker croons a selection of songs including "Frosty the Snowman," "Winter Wonderland" and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" on the festive CD 'Happy Holidays.'

And the British rocker insists he had no trouble hitting the right notes, because the songs just flowed out of him.

He says, "These songs were a challenge to sing as so many other singers have interpreted them in their own style.

"It was fun to come up against all that and find that these songs sing themselves."

There are a lot of early 80s videos on YouTube.

I think a big decline occurred when Michael Jackson and Madonna became popular.

Pleasantly surprised that we have FR Billy Idol fans! Billy understood and understands that he is AN ENTERTAINER, who had the chutzpah to choose an impertenant name for himself.

I appreciated all his 80's songs & videos.

I remember when Bing sang with David Bowie on Christmas. It was strange.

No, not strange, it was perfect!

Review: Holiday-themed albums need to either be pretty good, horrifically terrible, or completely original to cause even the jolliest head to turn. Twisted Christmas, a ten-track collection of yuletide classics from the band that once writhed atop a convertible singing the song "Burn in Hell" near the end of Pee Wee's Big Adventure, manages to achieve all three. Twisted Sister was always a group that would occasionally transcend their hair metal image with some truly majestic and powerful rock & roll, so it comes as no surprise that they filter the beloved Christmas carol through the same makeup-smeared sieve that brought the world "I Wanna Rock," "Wake Up the Sleeping Giant," and "The Prize." In fact, "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" sounds so much like a reimagining of "We're Not Gonna Take It," the listener can't help but become outraged at all of the injustice in the world. "Deck the Halls" sounds like a Ramones tune, "I'll Be Home for Christmas," featuring guest vocalist Lita Ford, could have launched a thousand lighters at any stadium in the late '80s, and the absolutely embarrassing "Heavy Metal Christmas" ("12 silver crosses, 11 black mascaras, ten pairs of platforms, nine tattered T-shirts, eight pentagrams, seven leather jackets, six cans of hair spray, five skullhead rings, four quarts of Jack, three studded belts, two pairs of spandex pants, and a tattoo of Ozzy") is almost impossible to turn off without seeing it through to its loathsome but charming end. ~ James Christopher Monger

I always loved "The Dead Next Door".
When he wants to, he can do a hybrid Elvis/Jim Morrison kind of thing.

"Sweet Sixteen" is a tear-jerker, moreso because it's based on the guy who built the Coral Castle for his [wannabe] girlfriend.

I love Billy and I'm not ashamed to admit it....:)

I like Billy Idol. I saw him in concert twenty years ago and he rocked it out.

He's looking pretty dapper in that picture too.

But I wonder if his rendition of White Christmas will be anything like his rendtion of White Wedding?

What is "No," Alex? It's on his MySpace page, and it's not remotely like it.

Silence the clip and scroll down for the video.

If you want really twisted Christmas, there's a song called "Santa Clause Has Got The AIDS This Year."
