SAN FRANCISCO -- Hall of Fame football coach Bill Walsh has leukemia, according to two reports Friday.
The 74-year-old coach, who led the San Francisco 49ers to three Super Bowl victories and revolutionized the sport with his West Coast offense, told The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa, Calif., and the Sports Xchange Web site that he has been battling the cancer for several years.
Walsh said he feels much better after a series of transfusions in the past month, and he intends to resume a more active schedule.
"I'm positive, but not evangelistic," he said. "I'm pragmatically doing everything my physicians recommend, and I'm working my way through it."
A call to Walsh's home wasn't immediately returned to The Associated Press.
Walsh didn't become an NFL head coach until he was 47, and he spent just 10 seasons on the 49ers' sideline. But he left an indelible mark on the United States' most popular sport, building San Francisco into the most successful team of the 1980s with his innovative offensive strategies and teaching techniques.
Few men did more to shape the look of football into the 21st century. His cerebral nature and often-brilliant stratagems earned him the nickname "The Genius" well before his election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
Walsh went 102-63-1 with the 49ers, winning 10 of his 14 postseason games along with six division titles. He was named the NFL's coach of the year in 1981 and 1984.

Ah geez.
Not even this Cowboy fan wants to hear this news.
No.
Isn't this like the 3rd person this week to have Leukemia?
Not good.
I see Walsh in a certain Sushi joint once every month or so. Super nice guy. Meek, humble and a very nice man. He does look a little worn lately, which now I understand from this news.
That's too bad. I was hoping he would coach again.
Prayers for him.
I learned about Bradley, and now this. I haven't heard of the third.
One of the GOP senators has it and is undergoing therapy for it right now.
The legends are going to start leaving us one by one. Don Shula's ticket is almost up...
Yep. Leukemia is what Tom Landry succumbed to.
yeah it's sad.
That was a great era in football...
I became a huge '49'ers fan while stationed in California in the early '80's while serving in the Air Force. It was a great time to become a '49'ers fan, and Joe Montana & Co. had unreal talent and skill........and the best coach in the NFL.
Get well, Bill.
The bright side is that they're going to a better place. Imagine the stadiums there.
I never realized he didn't become a head coach until was 47! Truly a great offensive mind.
"I could never understand why he left coaching," Walsh said. "I've never asked him about it. He just had such a great mind and he communicated brilliantly. He talked the player's language."

And games all the time too :)
As much as I despised the Niners in the late '80s-early '90s(they nearly always found a way to beat some pretty good Saints teams), I hope Walsh wins this battle, because he was a true wizard when he introduced the West Coast offense.
I wonder how efficient the concession stands are.
