Dr. James Dobson 'Heartsick' Over Haggard Allegations
Dr. James Dobson ^ | November 3, 2006 | Dr. James Dobson

COLORADO SPRINGS, Nov. 3 /Christian Newswire/ -- Focus on the Family founder and Chairman James C. Dobson, Ph.D., issued the following statement today after learning the Rev. Ted Haggard had acknowledged some "indiscretions" involving accusations made against him by a gay prostitute in Denver:

"All of us at Focus on the Family are heartsick over the allegation, not yet confirmed, that Ted has had a private life with a homosexual for several years. We will await the outcome of this story, but the possibility that an illicit relationship has occurred is alarming to us and to millions of others.

"Ted has been my close friend and colleague for many years. He has been used mightily to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Colorado Springs and around the world. He will continue to be my friend, even if the worst allegations prove accurate. Nevertheless, sexual sin, whether homosexual or heterosexual, has serious consequences and we are extremely concerned for Ted, his family and his church.

"We ask that the Focus on the Family constituency and Christians everywhere pray for Ted and his loved ones. Our hearts go out to all of them. Perhaps the allegations are false and the circumstances are not as we have heard. Either way, the situation has grave implications for the Cause of Christ and we ask for the Lord's guidance and blessings in the days ahead."

I have Dobson's book. Kindly tell me on which page he promotes child abuse.

"I don't get those looks anymore even if I wear my tight jeans."

Hmm...no tight jeans for me. That would get the "Ewwww!" look. Not what I'm going for. I'd settle for the "cute old man" look. I'll have to work on my presentation, I guess.

My wife just laughs at my expectations. She finds it very amusing. Ah, well...she found it amusing when they flirted with me, too. It's good to be able to amuse your wife....I guess.

"Their words condemn them."

Yes they do, and God help them! The horror stories I have seen and heard along these lines in MA, are just horrific! These activists will stop at nothing, believe it!

My wife constantly reminds me of this truism:

When a middle aged man looks in the mirror, he still sees the 18 year-old who used to stare back at him.

I have read his books. You are correct. He does not call for child abuse. It is his readers who misunderstand what he does call for. There are many such.

If your book is misunderstood, then it needs a thorough going over. Indeed, he has altered it from the first edition...considerably. Go find the first printing and read that.

Having seen the results of his book, I have little patience with it any longer.

by the principles laid out in Dobson's book. He still has scars on his back

It is absolutely FALSE that SCARRING is one of the principles in James' Dobson's books. Nonsense.

If he was raised by the principles laid out in Dobson's book...he should not! have scars on his back.

How can you lay this at the feet of James Dobson.

My son was raised by the principles laid out in Dobson's books and his radio ministry, and he has no scars...and there are many FReepers here who will attest to the same thing!

Please don't make such inflammatory statements.

"It is absolutely FALSE that SCARRING is one of the principles in James' Dobson's books. "

I did not say that it was. I said that this boy's father beat him and left scars. I know what Dobson's book says. I also know that it is badly misinterpreted by many people.

I say exactly what I mean to say. I have read every word Dobson has written on child-rearing. I believe that his writings have led some people to abuse their children, even though what they did, specifically, was not in his book. You may believe otherwise.

I form my own opinions. I do not expect that you will necessarily agree with them.

Re: Haggard allegations - "...but I see that he has bumped Jon Carry on breaking news and Jon Carry can affect a lot of votes."

Like another poster said, these kinds of revelations ARE held back until they're needed!

And - yes - this one about the pastor was released by a person or persons who wanted to change the subject off of the Kerry gaffe and the Jon Carry picture coverage!

Sadly - You're right on!

A homosexual affair is horrible - it exposes his wife and possibly his children to disease, especially AIDS.

As to the meth...the guy should just sign his will now. Meth has an FIRST use addiction rate of over 90%, meaning first-time users are almost certainly going to use it again. The stuff is an absolute nightmare.

I hate the hassle of getting my decongestants (I feel like a drug dealer or felon in the making), but what that drug does to people is obscene.

This bust may have saved his life.

Anyone who thinks Christians are perfect is wrong. We are forgiven but the temptations are still there. I have always believed that the more you do in service to Christ, the more temptations you are faced with. I can think of several prominent Christians who have fallen because of their sins.

My parents taught my sisters and I that we have to forgive people of their sins if we want to be forgiven of our own sins. When I talked to my mother this morning, she reminded me again that we have to forgive him. People need to minister to him and try to get him out of his sin, so he doesn't fall completely away from Christ. It is my prayer that people don't throw him to the wolves, and that they will go to him in the love of Christ and minister to him. I feel sorry for his family. They all need our prayer. I hope people will minister to his wife and kids too.

Pretty hard to see that, with all the money and fame it offers. Books, mansions, private planes, tv stardom, stadiums full of screaming followers.

They miss the point of God's blessings of wealth and prosperity -- they are supposed to PASS IT ALONG to help those less fortunate, the widows and orphans, etc., not KEEP IT!

The flagrant display of cheap money coaxed from those already on tight budgets just sickens me.

"It is possible, (though not necessarily probable) that he was ministering to this prostitute, in several ways, hoping to save him."

Yeah. Several ways. Buying dope, getting illicit sex.

Ministering. Saving him.

I am sorry you were hurt by this. Man is fallible...and does unrighteous things. Only He is perfect Love.

This is what the blible says ALL Christians should be like:

Ephesians 5:1-2

Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.
And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

I am sorry you were hurt by someone who should have represented God as love!

They can't. Their egos prohibit it.

"Dr. Dobson refused to comment to reporters" - which would make it an even bigger issue. I'm no fan of Dr. Dobson, but I think he took a nice, low-key approach.
