From the day they brought her home, the D'Avellas' black-and-white mutt loathed ringing phones. At the first trill, Jay Dee would bolt from the room and howl until someone picked up. But within a few weeks, the D'Avellas began missing calls: When the phone rang, their friends later told them, someone would pick up and then the line would go dead.
One evening, Aida D'Avella solved the mystery. Sitting in the family room of her Newark, N.J., home, Ms. D'Avella got up as the phone rang, but the dog beat her to it. Jay Dee ran straight to the ringing phone, lifted the receiver off the hook in her jaws, replaced it and returned contentedly to her spot on the rug
...Ethologists, the scientists who study animal behavior, have amassed thousands of studies showing that animals can count, understand cause and effect, form abstractions, solve problems, use tools and even deceive. But lately scientists have gone a step further: Researchers around the world are providing tantalizing evidence that animals not only learn and remember but that they may also have consciousness -- in other words, they may be capable of thinking about their thoughts and knowing that they know.

I should have a tagline- "Does my clean house mean I'm having trouble connecting to Comcast Cable?"

Border collies are almost too smart. Whenever one looks at me I get the feeling he knows exactly what I'm thinkning, and it freaks me out a little bit.

We have two cats. Our boy cat struts around like he owns the place. Tehy're both very smart.
Our boy cat likes the pull tabs off milk bottles. He came strutting in with one one Saturday moring while we were still in bed. Having just seen "The Lord of the Rigns" I lkooked at him and in my best Gollum voice, I said, "Precious." Well, andy time he hears trhat word, or even "pretzel," he starts looking for his pull tab.

When I was growing up, we ahd a dachshund named George who could spell. He knew waht "W-A-L-K" spelled, and after a while he even figured out my alternate spelling (which I dubbed the Old English spelling), w-a-l-q-u-e.

Animals are VERY perceptive. I've had dogs and currently cats. BOTH show love and caring when treated properly. Okay, we spoil them silly. We love em and they love us. They also know when they've done something wrong. They know what's wrong. I love animals!
I hate to say it but I have seen evidence that they are MORE perceptive than many humans I know ... .
