Weekend Eight was the weekend of near-misses and close calls. Texas, Cal and Notre Dame all escaped their games with wins. Texas won on a last second field goal in Lincoln against Nebraska, while ND drove 80 yards for a winning TD pass from Brady Quinn. Cal, however, had to go to overtime to defeat a steadily improving Washington team. It was business as usual for most of the top 5, with West Virginia, Auburn, Michigan and Ohio State all rolling to relatively easy wins. Unfortunately NDs narrow win and subsequent drop in the polls prompted whining from Charlie Weis, which is rebutted by ESPN columnist DJ Gallo here. Needless to say, putting Florida and Tennessee arent the biggest transgressions this past weekend. Having to come back against a mid-tier Pac10 team, with their backup Quarterback at the helm, at home, late in the 4th quarter, IS a problem for ND.
This weeks match up of the week pits Georgia and Florida in the Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. This is a fun game every year to watch.

A&M needs to play better defense against Baylor than they did against OK St. Baylor can score in bunches. If it can ever figure out the defense thing, they could be a dangerous team.
Baylor 37 Texas A&M 24
As UCONN proved last week against West Virginia, it has a problem stopping the run. Ray Rice should get close to 200 yards in this one.
Rutgers 35 UCONN 10
The ACC being down actually helps the "last mid-major standing" in Boise St because if BSU finishes in the top 16 in the BCS standings ahead of any of the other conf. champions, they're in.
Unfortunately I think Boise gets a better opponent than we did and I think they get beat very convincingly if they run into a team that can stop the run.
The thing that people have to understand, if they havent noticed it yet, is that BC is not a 56-0 coach unless the D he faces is terrible, he goes into a conservative mode to preserve the lead and to not make mistakes. However after a loss he tends to let his players open up more to rebuild confidence.
Plus I dont think the OSU Qb is upto snuff.
yeah but if Clemson does run the table and win the ACC, I don't think Boise St will be able to jump them.
we will see....
I don't trust Beau Bridges and neither should you.
I can't believe the College Football Season is over half gone already!
Iowa's starting QB (Drew Tate) is reported out for Saturday game, maybe until the Bowl game, assuming we'll make a bowl.
Still hoping for a Jan 1 FLA bowl if we win out, but the Alamo Bowl is looking more practical. But three of our 4 remaining games are at Kinnick and the last game is at Kinnick North (Minn - there are typically as many Iowa fans as Minny fans).
If the Defense steps up we can do it!
I love college Football!
On Iowa -
Go Hawkeyes!
You're right. It would basically take someone not named Clemson winning the ACC for the scenario I described to happen. So something like them getting upset in the ACC title game, but I wouldn't be too optimistic about that happening.
I'm surprised Minnesota can get the Metrodome half full. Thats gotta be the worst place for a college football game.
at the rate they are going, they need to get the ball back and score.....
a new year's day bowl will be hard to get too at this point.
That means jumping Wisconsin and Penn State, which may be a hard thing to go...
Still the Cap One Bowl is in reach....
Upset Alert:
Virginia Tech 17
Clemson 7
Clemson is in trouble. They have been flat all game.
I'm not upset about it.
I know, but the people who didn't take VT are....
of course not taking VT is kinda dumb on a Thursday night game.....they always seem to win....
Just tuned in a few minutes ago...
Looks like VT is gonna take them to the limit here.
Clemson needs a big turnover to get back in it.
yeah I don't think they are gonna get it....
If they hold VT to a FG here, then they have a chance.
If they don't (probably when they don't) it's over....
I'm still trying to figure out why you picked Baylor to beat A&M twice this weekend.
|
because someone requested that I pick A&M every week whether they are ranked or not.
So I give a little line about why I picked them....
Okay, that kinda sorta makes sense, but it made for an extra stroke-inducing flashing landmine. ;-)
Remember you can not use the phrase "World Largest Cocktail Party". It makes the President of Georgia all upset. If you do it he may hold hold the letter q hostage.
