Smoking - I'm Livid !
10/26/2006 | stylin19a

Posted on 10/26/2006 11:37:16 AM PDT by stylin19a

I am 2 hours post-op surgery.

The last words I heard before going under anesthesia were: "Quit Smoking"..from the anestheseologist.

The first words I heard coming out of the anesthesia, again by the anestheseologist, were "QUIT SMOKING".

Please...no pros\cons of smoking. Perhaps I'm too close to the surgery but, smoking now dries out my mouth, taste absolutely rotten and gives me a headache. I now have very little desire to smoke.

Please, no comments about no desire.

I don't think what the anestheseologist did is right. It's not his call to get me to quit smoking, it's mine...if and when I'm ready.

Is what he did legal ?

He said what he did because there are more problems with increased secretions and spasms of the airways because of smoking....which complicates going under anesthesia..not to mention that whole lung cancer thing.

That's probably it. No grand hypnotic conspiracy.

That doesn't mean there wasn't a subconscious desire to get him to quit smoking though. I find it a bit annoying if I'm going somewhere for treatment/medical advice, unrelated to smoking, and I get a lecture about smoking.

Only a complete dunderhead doesn't know it's bad for you; don't need a lecture about it.

You think that's funny?

Some of these surgical wings in hospitals are figging zoos. Some doctors and especially anesthetist's can be real classic examples of fruitcakes, when it comes to politics, drugs, and some habits of anyone but them. I have experience it. I know it happens, and I won't subject myself to it, as a direct result of what I have seen.

It is not funny, and like I said, someone is going to get hurt one day, and it won't be me.

Good Grief, I hope youre joking.

Telling someone to "quit smoking" is NOT a form of intimidation. If the anesthesiologist had refused to "put him under" because he opposed the patients right to smoke, that would be one thing, but thats not what happened.

A good case for involuntary psycho therapy?????? ROFL Thats a good one.

It's no different for an anesthesiologist to suggest quitting smoking than your mother, or father, or spouse saying it.

The anesthesiologist? You mean the guy (or gal) who you have absolutely no relationship with outside of 15 words spoken before an operation? That's the equivalent of your parents or spouse? This guy is not his personal physician and it's not his place to say anything.

Suggesting, to me, would be "you should quit smoking", or "I think you shouldn't smoke". If the mojo-man just told him "QUIT SMOKING, (jackass)", I can see the original poster's mood.

As far as I can tell, this is the United States of America. He has the right to speak. In fact, he probably has the duty to speak. Your freedom as a patient comes with your right to ignore his sound advice. He's not forcing anything. Was the patient coerced into quitting? Was he threatened? Was there talk of removing a digit if he didn't stop? Did the things that the anesthesiologist said in any way negatively affect his ability to do his job?

If the guy is tough enough to handle the surgery and all that nicotine, he can certainly handle a little disapproval.
