Good Girls Go Bad, for a Day
new york times ^ | 10/19/06 | STEPHANIE ROSENBLOOM

IN her thigh-highs and ruby miniskirt, Little Red Riding Hood does not appear to be en route to her grandmother’s house. And Goldilocks, in a snug bodice and platform heels, gives the impression she has been sleeping in everyone’s bed. There is a witch wearing little more than a Laker Girl uniform, a fairy who appears to shop at Victoria’s Secret and a cowgirl with a skirt the size of a tea towel.

Anyone who has watched the evolution of women’s Halloween costumes in the last several years will not be surprised that these images — culled from the Web sites of some of the largest Halloween costume retailers — are more strip club than storybook. Or that these and other costumes of questionable taste will be barely covering thousands of women who consider them escapist, harmless fun on Halloween.

“It’s a night when even a nice girl can dress like a dominatrix and still hold her head up the next morning,” said Linda M. Scott, the author of “Fresh Lipstick: Redressing Fashion and Feminism” (Palgrave Macmillan) and a professor of marketing at the University of Oxford in England.

The trend is so pervasive it has been written about by college students in campus newspapers, and Carlos Mencia, the comedian, jokes that Halloween should now be called Dress-Like-a-Whore Day.

I think MTV has done a very good job at pushing sexualization for the teen masses.

What are you thinking of pre-MTV?

Sorry. Wrong. Our church recently did a rather intensive study on this.....the facts simply do not bear out what you say in your reply about the so-called "Book of Judas", etc.

I'm still trying to figure out why Santa and the cross are both symbols of Christmas, but a crucifed Santa just ticks people off.

Yeah! It's just like Jesus and that tiny sleigh pulled by those eight tiny apostles..." ON Peter, on paul, and Silas and Jeshua not to mention that most famous apostle of them all Teddy the red nosed designated driver."

I agree with the ref costume...

In fact, given her devoted, um, following, the most common infraction would probably be "too many MEN on (in?) the field"...

Cheers!

the Book of Judas is also debunked in all of the biblical scholarship done with respect to the nonsensical Da Vinci Code as well.

Pardon me, but did you just compare a controversial historical text to a contemporary novel?

no, i said that the DEBUNKING of the judas gospel was done by biblical scholars who have also debunked the ludicrous novel. biblical scholars are familiar with BOTH genres.

Well, I certainly never said the gospel of judas is accurate - I said it exists, and was expunged from church literature.

no, but you basically equated it with the Bible and there is no equating it.

Um...isn't that like saying that there is no equating the Bible and the Book of Morman? (And, as you know, I am not a morman - but I certainly compared the two.)

Mayybe the word is the problem - I am not equating them, I am comparing them, looking for inconsistencies, and, in all honesty, consistencies.

I think the gospal of judas is exactly what it proports to be - sour grapes. "I did not betray Jesus, HE MADE ME DO IT!"

But...folks who cite their particular version of the bible, without examining any of the others, leave me shaking my head.

well you came across as happy slappy, there is no right or wrong, no one has the original of the Bible, so who really knows. and that to me just sounds like a way to justify doing whatever you want and saying there is no moral absolute. i don't believe it, and that attitude totally annoys me. if you didn't intend that, fine. but that is how it came across.

No, no 'assumption', and there are MANY facts, actually. it's just that too many are too intellectually lazy to research it (not aimed at you personally here).
