NEW YORK (AP) -- Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said he was "deeply disappointed" at his team's elimination in the first round of the AL playoffs, calling it a "sad failure."

New York was heavily favored in its series against the Detroit Tigers and won Tuesday's opener 8-4. The Tigers then won 4-3 at Yankee Stadium on Thursday, and swept two games in Detroit, 6-0 Friday and 8-3 Saturday.

"I am deeply disappointed at our being eliminated so early in the playoffs," Steinbrenner said in a statement issued Sunday by spokesman Howard Rubenstein. "This result is absolutely not acceptable to me nor to our great and loyal Yankee fans. I want to congratulate the Detroit Tigers organization and wish them well. Rest assured, we will go back to work immediately and try to right this sad failure and provide a championship for the Yankees, as is our goal every year."

Rubenstein said he spoke with Steinbrenner on Sunday.

"Clearly he was upset," he said.

Rubenstein said Steinbrenner was not going to comment on a report in the New York Daily News that manager Joe Torre likely will be fired and replaced by Lou Piniella.

Do you think We finally saw Roger pitch his last game or will his first start be on Labor day. Albert sez to tell Lidge hello.

Roger will be back. He can't let go of the game. Ever. Drama Queen to the end.

I'll let Lidge know the Smirk says hi. Good luck in the playoffs--honestly I thought you'd be gone already. As I said before this NLCS is my nightmare scenario.

Why do so many people think that Lou Pinella is such a great manager? Where has he been and what has he done? How many World Series has he won? Every time that I see him, he looks arrogant and totally stymied by misinformation. For me, he is not a manager for any World Series team -- although he might be a good manager for a second rate team on its way up.

If La Genius doesn't win the first 2 games of a series he's toast. You heard it here first.

On the one hand you have the Co-ards, with the Gnat and the Smirk, and Spiezio with his ridiculous crimson beard,

I'm a Cardinal fan, and I'm not familiar with the term "Co-ards", Gnat and Smirk.

I'm with you 100% on the Speizio thing though!

Think about this from the Cubs fan perspective... Hillary puts on a Cubs hat at Wrigley, and we've paid for it 90 years before and ever since.

You Yankees fans are doomed. Y'all need to kick her out of NY before you turn into the Devil Rays...

Co-ards refers to back in 2001 when La Russa insisted that the Cardinals be recognized as "co-division champions" along with the Astros because they had identical records, although tie-breakers would put the Astros ahead with the Cards winning the Wild Card.

The Gnat refers to Eckstein, and is actually a compliment. Brandon Backe said that Eckstein never gets out and never gives up, that he's like a gnat who won't go away.

The Smirk is Albert Pujols, who along with being the best hitter in the game (or maybe because of it) always has this obnoxious smirk when in the batter's box. Watch next time--I can see how St. Louis fans wouldn't mind but it annoys the heck out of other teams--as does his lumbering out of the box after crushing one.

Despite my enmity, I wish you good luck. It's not fun watching rivals advance in the playoffs whilst yours is at home.

You mean we weren't Co-Champions?

Ahh, the Gnat and the Smirk. I have noticed that Albert makes some funny faces up there at the plate. At first I thought he was not focusing, but I guess he has just a funny way about him.

As for the Astros, I used to really dislike them, kind of how you must feel about the Cards. However, they all seem like solid competitors and pretty decent guys. So, I have a lot of respect for them.

Of course, I'm no Phil Garner fan, but then again, I'm sure our manager is the most over-rated genius in baseball.

I love our series with the Cardinals. They always play hard and the last two playoffs have been special.

Cardinal fan since '64 when I saw Gibby beat the dodgers in Sportsman Park. I never liked Larussa when he was with the A's. Lawyer for a manager and a catcher for a pitching coach. It's a wonder we've went this far.
