NEW YORK (AP) -- Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said he was "deeply disappointed" at his team's elimination in the first round of the AL playoffs, calling it a "sad failure."
New York was heavily favored in its series against the Detroit Tigers and won Tuesday's opener 8-4. The Tigers then won 4-3 at Yankee Stadium on Thursday, and swept two games in Detroit, 6-0 Friday and 8-3 Saturday.
"I am deeply disappointed at our being eliminated so early in the playoffs," Steinbrenner said in a statement issued Sunday by spokesman Howard Rubenstein. "This result is absolutely not acceptable to me nor to our great and loyal Yankee fans. I want to congratulate the Detroit Tigers organization and wish them well. Rest assured, we will go back to work immediately and try to right this sad failure and provide a championship for the Yankees, as is our goal every year."
Rubenstein said he spoke with Steinbrenner on Sunday.
"Clearly he was upset," he said.
Rubenstein said Steinbrenner was not going to comment on a report in the New York Daily News that manager Joe Torre likely will be fired and replaced by Lou Piniella.
as a Twinkie fan, I feeel yur pain, George.
but not like you in the pocketbook.
Hey how are you enjoying that Central Division Title?
The rumored managerial change was news to Lou Pinella. I credit him with more sense than to go work for Steinbrenner...
Sure he's upset: he's shelled out almost half a billion dollars in salaries the last two years only to be knocked out in the opening round of the playoffs twice, and hasn't won it all since 2000. While that seems like only yesterday to Cubs and Cleveland fans (to name two long-suffering franchises), that's an eternity for the pin-stripers.
You can't buy the world series George. Once you accept the fact that you were beaten by a misfit team that was simply better than your millionaires the happier you'll be.
Then again, there's the Hilary curse to contend with, too.
Year 2000! Year 2000!
Not
NY media in a snit over Kenny Rogers. Why how dare he take the mound against the Yankees and win!
Bye, Joe. Bye, A-Rod.
The long knives are about to come out in the Bronx, and something tells me it won't be pretty. Sounds like The Boss has officially had it.

The sports media treated the Tigers like the news media treats the republicans. The Tigers led the entire major league for most of the season but you wouldn't have known it because they were fawning over the Yankees. It's like democrats on the day after the election they were supposed to win. If they had paid any attention they would have seen it coming.
I hope your analogy holds true come November 8, 2006.
Detroit fans know all too well that regular season titles don't mean squat. See Pistons and Red Wings. Shoot, the wild card may have worked out better for the Tigers seeing they were by far the best road team in baseball.
Nice to see the NY media having a hissy fit. AGAIN
Unfortunately, Billy Martin did not return George's calls.
