NEW YORK (AP) -- Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said he was "deeply disappointed" at his team's elimination in the first round of the AL playoffs, calling it a "sad failure."

New York was heavily favored in its series against the Detroit Tigers and won Tuesday's opener 8-4. The Tigers then won 4-3 at Yankee Stadium on Thursday, and swept two games in Detroit, 6-0 Friday and 8-3 Saturday.

"I am deeply disappointed at our being eliminated so early in the playoffs," Steinbrenner said in a statement issued Sunday by spokesman Howard Rubenstein. "This result is absolutely not acceptable to me nor to our great and loyal Yankee fans. I want to congratulate the Detroit Tigers organization and wish them well. Rest assured, we will go back to work immediately and try to right this sad failure and provide a championship for the Yankees, as is our goal every year."

Rubenstein said he spoke with Steinbrenner on Sunday.

"Clearly he was upset," he said.

Rubenstein said Steinbrenner was not going to comment on a report in the New York Daily News that manager Joe Torre likely will be fired and replaced by Lou Piniella.

Bye, Joe. Bye, A-Rod.

Just how do you get rid of A-Rod? Nobody wants to pay him that much and he has a no trade clause. I think the Yankees are stuck.

The Wild Card team over the years has done very well in the Divisional Series, and for a few years the WC team won the World Series.

They almost have an advantage, in that you have a much better shot at beating a better team in a 5-game series, than if it was a 7-game series.

Detroit fans know all too well that regular season titles don't mean squat.

Heck, see last year's Steelers and Edmonton Oilers. Heck last year all four higher seeds in the Western Conference went out of the first round of the NHL playoffs.

Jim Leyland is my personal MVP pick. He's the man that turned prima donnas like Pudge and trouble makers like Rogers into mentors.

I thought the media gave a lot of attention to the Tigers. How about the A's. It's even money whether they'll even be allowed into the stadium for the ALCS. They might just have the Twins play the Tigers, because they're "supposed to win the World Series."

It was wonderful to see.

And the game, from a selfish point of view came at the perfect time. Hubby just out of the hospital and the games were such a wonderful distraction. He's long long been a Tiger's fan. Had his Tiger baseball cap right there on the couch!

maybe he needs to spend $300,000,000 next year.

hell with it. just sign every player in baseball. including the kids in the minors. even though they won't fit on the 25 man roster, they won't be able to play for anyone else.

instant world series victory.

As a 'Stros fan I have to say that I can't imagine an NLCS in which I dislike both teams as much as I do. On the one hand you have the Co-ards, with the Gnat and the Smirk, and Spiezio with his ridiculous crimson beard, and the past history the last couple of seasons anyway. Then there's the steM with the Deserter Beltran, the Mouth Wags, and the past history (86 anyone?).

That said, I'd rather the steM advance to the Series out of that mix. At least I hope it's good baseball.

He'd probably place it right there with his perfect game, given the way he was emotional and the fans were loving it.

I don't know. As a baseball fan in general, I rather enjoyed it.

Neither the Cards nor the Mets have the pitching to beat the As or Tigers. And as the Yanks - Tigers series demonstrated, good pitching wins out!

But As Yogi Berra says, in baseball no one knows nothing!

It depends whose hot at the right time.

I should be pulling for the NL to win at least 1 game this year, but I picked the Tigers to win it all (at the beginning of the postseason, I'm not so prescient as to have done so at the beginning of the season).
