Apple iPhone to be Cingular-exclusive at launch

Apple and Cingular have signed an agreement that will make the US' largest cell phone provider the exclusive carrier of Apple's forthcoming phone, sources report. Apple's iPhone remains on track for an early 2007 release.

As previously reported, Apple's phone will feature a candy-bar design with a 2.2-inch display and 3 megapixel camera. Robust iTunes and iSync support will also be delivered with the phone.

Apple's exclusive contract with Cingular is said to be good for the first six months, sources report, meaning other providers will be able to sell the phone in the second-half of 2007. Cingular had an exclusive on the Motorola ROKR—the first phone to feature iTunes—when it launched last year.

Sources say Apple is in talks with providers in other parts of the world on exclusive deals, but are short on specifics. O2 had the exclusive on the ROKR in Europe, however, suggesting that provider may again be tapped to launch Apple's phone.

Meanwhile, insiders say Apple is internally estimating that shipments of the iPhone will top a staggering 25 million in 2007 alone. Motorola's RAZR, by contrast, has sold more than 50 million units since its launch in late 2004. Apple is betting a phone with Apple's iconic design, elegant interface, and iPod-matching functionality will be a strong draw for users who currently carry both devices on them.

Whatever Cingular gets, T-Mobile (my carrier) usually gets soon after. Sounds good to me.

If there was a JD Power award for most dropouts, cussing and beating a countertop with the phone out of frustration, Cingular would win hands down.

#1 obstacle for me - cost. I generally upgrade phones every few years through a contract extention and get a decent phone for $50 or less.

I somehow don't see this Apple phone being one to fall into that category. I'm figuring an after-rebate (for new activation) price of somewhere around $299....but I could be wrong.

It'll be available to all carriers "the second half of 2007".

I guess it depends on your location. I have had the most trouble-free service/reception in the last several years - ever since we switched to Cingular from Alltel. Far fewer dropped calls.

On the other hand, my Mother and Step-father use Verison and HATE IT - they have dropped calls everywhere they have gone with them - including large metro areas. New phones, new software - nothing matters.

I have heard the same from Sprint customers.

T-mobile, if you stay in a major metro area can be great. Horrible in the "sticks".

I would prefer a modern interpretation on the best design ever:

You forgot to mention surly and incompetent CSRs, and a website that frequently contains contradictory information.

I'm sure there's a market for it, I just am not in that category. Unlike people under 25 years of age, I don't need to blast my hearing every waking minute that I'm not blabbing on the phone; and don't need to be text messaging at all; also, I don't need to carry a camera all the time, along with the user manual to look up how to make everything work right.

Better to spend the $299 on Apple stock instead. ;')

It won't matter because Verizon will cripple all the useful features and force you to by $2.99 songs from their crappy download store...;-)

Slim, anyone?

Others in the same series:

Samsung has introduced its latest array of slim mobile phones, dubbed ‘The Ultra Edition,’ at CommunicAsia 2006 that redefines the concept of ‘mobile communications.’

Samsung’s Ultra Edition 6.9 (X820) weighs 66 grams, measures 6.9mm in depth, and has a 2 megapixel camera.

Samsung’s Ultra Edition 9.9 (D830) is a 9.9 mm ultra slim clamshell and comes outfitted with a 2 megapixel camera, a 2.3” wide display, an external memory slot for extra storage and comes in a variety of colors and patterned designs.

The Ultra Edition 12.9 offers the latest in multimedia technology with premium slide-up design for business professionals. The 12.9mm slide-up is the thinnest slider ever designed to come equipped with a powerful 3.13 megapixel camera and has a 262K color screen.

“Ergonomically designed to become one with the user, Samsung’s phones move beyond the limitations inherent in slim phones to embody the perfect combination of comfort, simplicity and sophistication to let users do more with less,” said Kitae Lee, President of Samsung’s Telecommunication Network Business.

“It is human nature for people to communicate with others and Samsung’s Ultra Editions are dedicated to bringing people together with functionality and ease of use. With its exceptional sleek and ultra slim design, Samsung’s mobile will effortlessly integrate into the user’s everyday life, connecting them to the rest of the world,” said Lee.

Apple is missing a bet if they don't go into the same space as blackberry, Treo, etc. I have to have Internet access and email. With a keyboard. Camera and MP3 are nice, but not essential for business. Put it all in a small phone and I will jump on it. (But not till after it is sold by someone other than Cingular. Never again.)

Don't really see how they will work a qwerty keyboard into the form factor but it would be interesting.
