Geology Picture of the Week, September 17-23, 2006: Lascar's Amazing Ash Cloud
Various
Posted on 09/22/2006 12:24:39 PM PDT by cogitator
Chile's Lascar Volcano is one of the highest altitude active volcanoes in the world, and might actually be the champion. Here's what it looked like in April 1993 from space (look for the ash cloud):

That ash cloud is the remnant activity from a previous explosion that was fairly impressive from the ground a few kilometers away.

Do you see a bird face in the first picture???
To: ClearCase_guy
I hope that's not contributing to Global Warming! The effect, if any, would be a cooling. But this wasn't big enough (though it was big). In '93, the Pinatubo effect was still working.

Upon closer examination, I now realize it's a peacock, not a goose. I think it means someone's going to have a baby.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII don't know, now .... I think it's the umbrella handle from Mary Poppins .. it is practically perfect, you know.

WoW! That's an awesome picture! I can't imagine living so close to an active volcano. Those people standing there are pretty brave, as far as I'm concerned. Btw, thanks for the ping! :o)

WoW! That's an awesome picture! I can't imagine living so close to an active volcano. I think that's actually a research camp or weather station, but it's still daunting to be that close.

OK, how high is Mt. Lascar?
BTW, you are all mistaken. The face you see is the Chilean Chicken of Chickaboombah.

OK, how high is Mt. Lascar? 5592 meters; 18,346 feet.
Guallatiri is higher (19,918 feet), and still has hydrothermal activity at the summit, and last erupted in 1960. So "highest active volcano" will depend on how "active" is defined, obviously.
