Red Hat ranks no. 29 on Fortune's 2006 list of the 100 Fastest-Growing Companies. The Raleigh, North Carolina-based company saw profits rise at a rate of 143% and revenues grow 47% with a stock return of 46% on average annually over the past three years.
ADVERTISEMENT click here Each year, Fortune's ranking of Fastest-Growing Companies provides a snapshot of America's economy, and this year the picture is drenched in oil. Last year 18 energy firms cracked the top 100 - up from four in 2000. Now more than a third of the roster - 34 companies - are in the energy biz.
But oil is hardly the whole story. Computer and biotech firms make their usual strong showing. Catering to Americans' obsession with how they look (and how well they see) has been remarkably lucrative: LCA-Vision, a laser surgery provider, lands at no. 5, followed closely by Palomar Medical Technologies, which makes laser devices used in cosmetic skin treatments.
This year, just two homebuilders made the cut: Toll Brothers at No. 98 and Meritage Homes at No. 99. Last year there were four homebuilders and two land developers on the list. Fortune's 100 Fastest-Growing Companies list is an annual ranking of U.S. companies by three-year growth in sales, profits and total return that meet key criteria for sales, profit and market capitalization size and sales and profit growth.
Companies on this year's list include: Yahoo, Sonic Solutions, Digital River, Valueclick, and Cognizant Technology Solutions.

But, but, Linux is bad for our economy, it ruins American companies!

Well, if your profits are zero dollars the previous year, 143% is not so hard to acheive, now is it? Guess they managed to sell one copy for $143.00 or, more than likely, 143 copies for $1.00 each. Go Red Hat!!!
I'm only kidding guys, this is good news for Red Hat, and all Linux distros. I am happy to see Linux start to make BIG impact in the market. Microsoft has gotten very lazy and maybe this will help kick them to be more progressive. We all win when creative competition is fierce.
BTW: I know Red Hat is #1, but does anyone know what the other top versions are?
According to distrowatch.com the number one downloaded distro is Ubuntu.
In terms of Linux that is sold, RedHat is indeed number one, followed by SuSE.
Really? That is surprising. I have used Ubuntu and like it. I would have assumed SuSe was downloaded more. Thanks for the info.
Just out of curiosity, do you know which PC's have Linux pre-installed? I have a brother who wants to work with Linux and is in the market for a new PC. He's a total MS guy but wants to check out other options.
Due to Microsoft's hammerlock on OEMs, almost none. Some mom-and-pop computer shops will sell you a PC with Linux on it. Wal-mart has a PC preloaded with Mandriva.
I've heard that you can get a Lenovo laptop pre-loaded and Emperor Linux sells laptops with Linux.
Best bet for your brother is to install something like VMWare and run Linux inside of it.
I'll probably just help him install a dual boot/dual drive with Linux and whatever version of windows his new PC will have.
As always, thanks for the help. I don't always agree with the people on these threads, but you people on the ping list are very knowledgeable!!
You guys even convinced me to give Linux a try ... and I'm a Micro$oft Clone!! I've been using Mandrake, off and on, for over a year. I recommend to all people I know in IT jobs to try both and decide what works best. I like the variety of using both MS and Linux.
