"Dog" Chapman Arrested, Faces Extradition

MSNBC's Rita Cosby is reporting that Duane Dog Chapman, star of the A&E reality series "Dog the Bounty Hunter," and two members of his bounty hunting team (including his son) were arrested by U.S. officials today for extradition to Mexico. Cosby is reporting that Mexican government officials wanted the three men sent back there in relation to a three-year-old case.

In 2003, Chapman traveled to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to retrieve Max Factor cosmetics heir Andrew Luster, who was wanted in the U.S. on rape charges. Luster is now in jail, serving a 124-year term. The Chapmans were jailed in Mexico for a brief time for the incident three years ago. Bounty hunting is considered a crime in Mexico.

Dog's wife, Beth Chapman, said 12 armed marshals "came through the door" at 6:00AM this morning. She said they took their daughter's boyfriend down at gunpoint. Dog was sleeping at the time.

TMZ spoke with Nicky Credic from the U.S. Marshals Office. She said, "The arrest warrant was signed by a U.S. magistrate in Hawaii on September 13. The warrant was based on a formal request based on a diplomatic note from the government of Mexico."

EXCELLENT POINT!

I'm not a big Dog fan, but this is really nutty. I hope he got to fly down business class and eat Shrimp Rockefeller and drink wine the whole way.

I'm only surprised that this took so long. Chapman jumped bond just as the miscreants he brags so much about apprehending did. He is no better than those he criticizes several times a week on TV.

It's no secret that "bounty hunting" is illegal in Mexico. There were several remedies he could have exercised when he located Luster but "Dog" didn't take advantage of them. Instead he played out a risky grandstand act and lost.

Once he posted bond to the Mexican court, he made a promise in exchange for his freedom pending a hearing regarding an alleged violation of Mexican law. The terms of his release required him to report to the Court every Monday and further to make himself available for trial on the alleged violation. He broke his promise and now must face and accept the consequences.

I don't see the problem......

First the two border patrol agents, now this. Does our government work for us or Mexico?

The charges were dropped by the Mexi government. This is something out of left field.

No. I'm not kidding. Further, as I remember it, the charges were dropped against the two individuals who went along to cover the event for Chapman's upcoming tv show. One was the show's producer and the other an actor. The charges against Chapman, his son and brother were not dropped.

At a time proximate to the arrest:

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico — Five Americans were released from a Mexican jail Saturday, days after allegedly capturing the fugitive heir to the Max Factor (search) fortune, a convicted rapist.

But the five, including three bounty hunters, a television producer and an actor, must remain in Mexico under the terms of the release, their attorneys said. Authorities did not comment on the release. Leaving police custody Saturday, the men declined to be interviewed.

Hawaii-based Duane "Dog" Chapman ; his brother, Timothy; his son, Leland; producer Jeff Sells and actor Boris Krutonog were arrested Wednesday about two hours after they captured Andrew Luster near a Puerto Vallarta taco stand where he had just ordered breakfast.

Authorities expelled Luster to the United States, and the cosmetics heir has begun a serving a 124-year prison sentence in Los Angeles for drugging and raping three women.

Mexican prosecutor Marco Roberto Juarez said Friday the five Americans will be charged with criminal association and illegal deprivation of liberty, similar to kidnapping without requesting a ransom. Both charges carry a maximum of four years in prison.

Later:

July 4, 2003 (AP)

Three bounty hunters facing charges over their capture of fugitive rapist Andrew Luster can travel where they want as long as they show up at court here each Monday, the judge overseeing the case said.

"They can do what they want with their free time," Judge Jose de Jesus Pineda Gutierrez told The Associated Press on Wednesday after being told that Duane "Dog" Chapman, his son Leland and brother Timothy, had returned to Los Angeles. Pineda last month ordered the three tried on charges of criminal association and deprivation of liberty for a predawn seizure of Luster, the Max Factor heir convicted in absentia in California of drugging and raping three women.

Prosecutors say the bounty hunters had no legal standing in Mexico and should have gone to police instead of snagging Luster themselves. Each of the charges carries a maximum sentence of four years, though attorneys said Mexico's complex sentencing laws mean the maximum possible sentence would fall well short of eight years. The case was to be handed over to a judge in Guadalajara in the coming weeks.

Pineda released the bounty hunters on 15,000 pesos (US$1,430) bail each on the condition that they sign in at the court in Puerto Vallarta each Monday. Mexican immigration officials added a bail of 3,000 pesos each - less than US$300. If the defendants don't appear, an arrest warrant could be issued and they could be imprisoned if they return to Mexico.

During a news conference in Beverly Hills, California, on Wednesday, Chapman said he would return to Mexico "soon." "We still don't think we broke the law," he said. Chapman's U.S. attorney, James E. Blancarte, said he did not expect that his client would have to serve more prison time in Mexico.

Authorities briefly detained and charged a television producer and actor who went along with the bounty hunters to videotape Luster's capture, but Pineda threw out the charges against them.

If you can find credible evidence that the charges were dropped against Dog, his son and brother great. Send it to the Judge, because clearly he doesn't think the charges were dropped.........

Personally I really don't care that it is "against the law to bounty hunt in Mexico". When Mexico quits trying to destroy our economy by depriving their citizens of the basic necessities of life, which is what makes them come here, and refusing to send cop killers to us for their deserved justice, maybe then I'll have some respect for their laws.

The Dog brought a known rapist to justice. Mexico would never have given him up because he was a very wealthy man and could pay their bribes and would have lived out his life there. If Osama Bin Laden was in Mexico they'd not give him up, so crap on them!

Mexican law.

There's an oxymoron if I ever heard one!

Like I said before, the only reason that the rapist wasn't "found" by Mexican authorities is because he was rich and was paying the right whores! This is bogus!

Tell the judge to come to the US and get all the Mexican criminals that V.Fox sent here to support their corrupt government.

I'm not a Dog Chapman fan, but this stinks to high heaven.

That's because Dog came into Mexico illegally and took a guy who paid good bribes and promised more money back to the USA for trial.

Mexico is tough when it comes to their border regarding others and those who interfere with their bribes.

Thanks for the pic. Now, what the heck is a 'Dog Chapman?' Is he some kind of comic book hero, and nobody to be 'messed with?' Or is he a guy trying to be a comic book hero?
