Diana Wanted to Become America's First Lady

By KATE SNOW

NEW YORK, Sept. 12, 2006 — In his new blockbuster book, "The Way We Were," Paul Burrell says that Princess Diana had ambitions to become the first lady of the United States.

"She knew a billionaire in America, and she suggested to him that if they were together. … His yearning to run in politics could lead to the White House, that one day she could be the first lady and she'd visit Britain on a state visit," Diana's former butler and confidant said to "Good Morning America's" Kate Snow in an exclusive interview.

Burrell said that in the mid-1990s Diana had dreamed of following in the footsteps of stylish first ladies.

"She's been a huge fan of Jackie Onassis for years, and a huge admirer, too, of Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton. But Jackie Onassis had the edge. And she fantasized about redecorating the White House," Burrell said.

"It wasn't a fantasy. It could have been a reality. It really could. They would have been a golden couple."

While the mystery man in New York had political connections, he was not the love of Princess Diana's life.

Neither was Prince Charles or Dodi Al Fayed, Burrell said, who dismisses claims that Diana was engaged to Fayed when they died in a Paris car crash.

"She was not going to marry Dodi Al Fayed, because there was someone else in her life. She had a soul mate, and she'd fallen in love with someone else," he told Snow.

She will. Went all the way to the Supreme Court, but Pierce Marshall, the son who was fighting it, died in June. And now she has a new heiress and one less heir.

>>>And we watched her grow up, fight the paparrazzi, raise two beautiful sons, wear gorgeous clothes etc...And still feel vunerable and unloved... A kindred spirit for many in the world.>>>

Yep. She WAS us. Us women who felt unloved, raising children and trying to protect them from the harsh world... In alot of ways, she took aspects of alot of women in alot of stages. MOST women/girls could relate to Di in some way or another.

OK,we agree on several points but disagree on one.Yes,she was a lightweight. And from what little I heard her say,I doubt that she was ever mistaken for a brain surgeon. And the fuss that was made about her while alive...and after her death...was silly.

But I would have given everything I had to spend an hour alone with her.

Different strokes for different folks,as Sly Stone once said.

Could any pairing be more photogenic?

Carolyn Bessette made Pricess Di look like a man.

One of these things is not like the others....
____________

Yup. One of them married a Republican. But I guess that's not where you were going :)

My point is that nobody would even know who Paris Hilton is, except that she's got her face plastered all over the media these days. If she died in a car wreck tomorrow, about 99.99% of Americans wouldn't even notice a change in their lives.

I'm with you. I don't get the fascination with royalty in general and Di in particular. Maybe when it comes to royalty, the French got it right for once.

On the other hand, in the US, what's the difference between the fawning hollywood press and our worship of actors, rock stars, pseudo stars (Paris Hilton, Anna Nicole) and the way royalty is treated/worshipped?

My gosh we treat political statements from Brad Pitt & Shakira as newsworthy!!!!

Nancy Reagan married a Democrat. But then he wised up!

Rats, the secret is out. I did have an affair with Diana and I did mention I had presidential ambitions. Then she immediately said she would like to be first lady. Well, you cannot have everything.

You beat me to it. JFK, Jr. already had a beautiful, stylish wife.

Not really. She was NEVER a normal girl, despite the MSM fantasy. Before she was princess di she was Lady Diana Spencer. Growing up she played with Prince Andrew, whom she had originally hoped to marry. She wasn't some commoner who snagged a prince. She was one of them. Her father at one time had hoped to be the Queen's consort.

Doesn't anyone wonder why Charles preferred Camilla over Diana? Or any number of other women.

OK. So Lady Diana Spencer was quite cute.

Having said that, I nominate her as "The most insignificant significant personage of the 20th Century"

Any seconds?

I went to high school with Pesci!

My brother would go to the barber shop where Pesci barbered so that he could rub elbows with the likes of Frankie Valle and other New Jersey rock and rollers!

My brother is now bald and I tease him about Pesci's skills!

"rather than live happily ever after she had such a sad ending."

I never cared one way or the other about the woman. I'm sorry she died, but just in the same way I'm sorry a stranger down the street died. You make a great point though. She was welshed out of the "happily ever after" part of the bargain.

Now I'm a little sad for her. Thanks for the richer more emotion filled life, lol.
