Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Mawwage is what bwings us togethew today!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Anyone have any tips for moving adult apple trees? There's two apple trees in the back forty, and we want them out of there regardless. They aren't real big. We just thought that maybe rather than just cutting them down, we might cut them way back to bare minimum, pull them out of the ground with the truck along with whatever root we can get, and see if we can move them. Maybe they'll make it, probably they won't, but we'll give them a chance. They just can't be where the horses are. I end up not being able to use the back forty for most of the late summer.

Yeah - he could do it, but I'd have to pay him :~) I should have said "anyone have any tips for how I could do this for free?"

Well, that looks like a lot of work... I'm thinking 'hook a chain around it and pull it out with the truck, and see what happens' :~)

We actually were discussing whether the Shoes would sign. Too bad they didn't!

Hullo there!

Are you taking a touristy scenic way home with stops, or just getting there?

Mostly just getting there though we are planning to stop at the Air Force museum and look at planes on the way. Should be home tomorrow night.

A test for the outdoorsy types in the group: Can you identify this poop? Found in my back forty. On my screen it's ~about~ actual size. It's entirely made up of seeds... mostly blackberries.

I know what it is... but it threw me for a loop for awhile searching google images of animal droppings.

From what I've read, cutting the branches back to reduce the trauma to the tree is a good idea. After it has borne its fruit, it will be going into a dormant mode anyway. Cutting a really good sized root ball will give it a chance in its new location. If you don't want to plant them in your yard, maybe Rosie could use them in her yard, or you could offer them on craigslist.
