Get Vista RC1 while you can

Microsoft released Windows Vista RC1 to testers last week and today it has opened the doors to anyone that wants to take a test drive. The download weighs in at around 2.6GB for the 32-bit version and 3.7GB for the 64-bit version. Everyone should hop on and get the download as quickly as possible – Microsoft could pull the plug at any time. You can register to get a product key from the following link.

You can try out Vista RC1 for free until June 1, 2007. After that, you’ll have to pony up for one of four versions of Vistas (full/upgrade):

* Windows Vista Home Basic, $199/$99.95
* Windows Vista Home Premium, $239/$159
* Windows Vista Business, $299/$199
* Windows Vista Ultimate, $399/$259

For those of you who run into software incompatibilities and driver issues during testing, be sure to contact your software vendor/hardware manufacturer so that are made aware.

Go to the Dailytech link to download

The only thing in Windows that I use on a regular basis that forces me into a dual boot is Visio. Everything else either has a Linux version, can be run from a browser or has a Linux replacement.

Since you seem to be computer savvy, would you happen to know if there is a color-code in html for transparent or clear?

There isn't one. HTML codes come in triplets of RED, GREEN, and BLUE (RGB). So a value of #000000 is equal to black, while #ffffff would be white.

For instance, #ff0000 is Red, #00ff00 would be Green, and #0000ff would be Blue.

Mix up the triples by changing the three values, and you gett all the colors you'd want.

In order to put hidden text on the screen (your request for transparent text), you'd have to match the background you are writing to. For instance, to get white text to match the background of FR, you'd use #ffffff -- and you'll get white text. Simple, huh?

No, but you could add this to your paragraph tag (or span): style="display:none;"

Unfortunately, that doesn't work on FR, though... the posting function strips inline style code. :(

The network stuff is screwed up beyond belief.

I found Vista to be very snappy when downloading.. I have Cable internet and get very good speeds with Vista(better than with XP) Dont know why... about 20kb's better about 620KB/Sec with WinXP about 640KB/Sec with Vista...

It's for anyone who is interested. The range of knowledge on the list spans from nothing to guru. People have asked to be on it just to read the tech threads for learning purposes, others, so they can help. I don't deny anyone who would like to be on it.

I do not "do" Photoshop CS2. Any image manipulation that I need to do is simple enough that it can be handled by GIMP.

I run eight machines here at home (I just do...)

Jesus! I was concerned that I was a geek for running 2 desktops and a laptop at home. I prostrate (not prostate) myself before you, O Übernerd! :)

I just love secret messages.

(With Firefox, highlight the blank area to see your secret message. Faster than using my old decoder ring!)

I run eight machines here at home (I just do...) and I have no desire to put another OS on any of them, even if they gave me a free license.

Counting everyone's machines, we're about the same. $800+ to upgrade all the machines to Vista? No thank you.
