Cult movie director David Lynch has received a lifetime achievement award at the Venice Film Festival.
Lynch, 60, has gained a reputation for complex films, including Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart and cult TV series Twin Peaks.
He was also at the festival to premiere his latest film, Inland Empire, which includes hallucinatory scenes and a talking rabbit voiced by Naomi Watts.
Lynch assured baffled critics "it's supposed to make perfect sense".
"Every film is like going into a new world, going into the unknown. But you should be not afraid of using your intuition, and feel and think your way through," he added.
Experimental movie
The director did not present his actors with a full script, instead handing them a few pages of dialogue each morning as they turned up to shoot their scenes.
The process took two-and-a-half years.
"It's important to be able to experiment," he said.
Star Laura Dern admitted even she was not sure what the film was about.
"The truth is I didn't know who I was playing - and I still don't know.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the film tonight to learn more," she said.
I thought his flick "Mulholland Drive" was good.
One of my favorite directors...a real artiste!
But then,I'd watch Laura Dern read the Manhattan telephone directory.
Lynch didn't direct that--that was Fincher.
Laura Dern was good in "We Don't Live Here Anymore" but I don't find her terribly attractive. I keep recalling her BS about violence in films and Republicans on some TV show--Larry King?--years ago. What a nitwit.
Lynch is a true original. You go into his movies without knowing what he's going to show you, and though it's always unexpected, it is true to his artistic character, not just something tossed up to be different.
Oh,it's a given that Hollywood types would be clueless when it comes to politics. But after having seen Jurassic Park,I fully understand why Wayne's World coined the term "babeasaurus".
To each his own,I guess.
"No hay banda...."; "This is the girl....."; etc, etc.
Check out Laura Dern in "Citizen Ruth".
Yeah, it's all a matter of personal preference. She's scary-looking to me. My idea of fine is Michelle Pfeiffer in her prime.
There is something driew ylsuoires about a David Lynch production. Still, when it comes down to the short list of people you'd like to have a beer with ... Lynch earns an "I'll have what he's having" entry :)
Straight Story was rated G. I saw part of it. Anyone care to comment on that one?
"Lost Highway" with Robert Blake and Robert Loggia, a truly weird and very enjoyable movie.
Lynch is great. Weird, but great. One of America's best filmmakers.
One of my all-time favorite directors. If you are a Lynch conniseur, rent "Lumiere" or his short films DVD. "Lumiere" was a series of short films shot on a rebuilt Lumiere brothers camera by various directors-- Lynch's is last and is OUTSTANDING.
He's brilliant. I wish he'd stop smoking because I want him to stick around for a long time. BTW, I hear he is a conservative. I sat with him for a day in the edit bay while we recut a commercial he directed-- way back in '92 or so. He was a genuinely warm, patient, open hearted man.
Blue Velvet rules...and any soundtrack that combines the strains of Angelo Badalamenti and the melancholy vocals of the Polish Prince is top shelf.
I loved Lost Highway and Mulholland Dr. I just saw Inland Empire and it was three hours long. As with any Lynch film, it needs to be seen a second time.
