Thank God he didnt injure himself further or anyone else, however, I have seen drivers that HAVE two eyes and still drive worse than him.

Well, this explains the use of braille on the drive-up ATM machines' buttons.

He must have seen "Hear no evil see no evil" and decided to attempt to play both Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor.

Seriously though overcoming or adapting to a disabilty is one thing being an idiot and an intentional threat to everyone elses saftey and well being is quite another. Disabilities does mean certain limitations.

Recently, I saw a person in a car carrying on a spirited conversation on the cell phone. Like you said, "he was weaving all over the place. A truly dangerous dumbass."

I was almost run over by a lady (who was NOT deaf) who came within one foot of me before she stopped her car. She was distracted talking on her cell phone. She was truly a dangerous dumb-ass!

I agree there are all manner of dumbass drivers who don't pay attention for various reasons. I cited a specific case of a deaf driver who was carrying on a "conversation" with both hands, eyes on his passenger and driving in a single lane construction area. Two handed sign language in a moving vehicle is totally irresponsible behavior. A deaf driver can be perfectly safe or just as distracted as any other driver.

BTW, I'm not picking on deaf people. For years I converted old teletypes for use by the deaf community. I also integrated the deaf community into our Sunday school classes with live signing. The Sunday school proved so popular that we spun off a whole deaf ward drawn from the surrounding community.

Yes, you can't drive in a single lane construction area and sign with both hands or actually even one hand. That's just silly. But also, you should not be on the cell phone in a single lane construction area either.

I think it's great that you've reached out to a new group that many people don't consider (with your church work). wallcrawlr has a deaf/hard of hearing ping list; let him know if you want to be added to it.

It was actually my involvement in ham radio that first offered an opportunity to help. The ham swap meets had old teletype machines for sale. I refurbished one for use on 220 MHz RTTY. It wasn't all that hard. Another of my ham friends was buying them to do refurbishments for the deaf community. He had a garage full. I helped him get all of them up and running. When I decided to move to a computer (Heathkit H-8 in 1981), I sold my whole setup to a guy who was both deaf and a ham.

The church opportunity happened by accident and turned out a great success. It was a good experience for everyone.
