Horses being slaughtered for human consumption [ending up on FRENCH TABLES]

A cruel fate awaits these horses at the Kaufman slaughterhouse.

Warning: This video contains disturbing images of the slaughter of Horses
[It's images hard to ease from your mind so beware.]

From the Alamo to the open range, the horse is permanently woven into the fabric of Texas.

A cruel fate awaits these horses at the Kaufman slaughterhouse.

But this symbol of the west is being slaughtered by the thousands here in Texas, only to end up on the dinner tables of Europe.

Next week, Congress could change that and for residents of one Texas town it can’t be soon enough.

In the shadows of a great American symbol, a great American icon quietly begins to stir. A nearby dumpster and a vulture circling above hint at the gruesome fate that awaits.

And so begins another day at the Dallas Crown Plant in Kaufman, Texas.

“It’s a dirty little secret, that doesn’t benefit the city of Kaufman, the state of Texas or the United States,” said Kaufman mayor Paula Bacon.

Americans think there are laws to protect horses. They have no idea that three foreign-owned slaughterhouses, not American-owned, are operating in this country, two in Texas, and killing 100,000 American horses.

A bit more tender, yes. You need to stick to the little purple-pink ones but they are a little rubbery. Not a bad flavor. I draw the line at sea urchins, though, but some people like them.

I don't even know how to respond to someone who's living in a dream world. The spca could take on an extra 60,000 horses PER YEAR???? On what planet? With whose money??

"Not all who prefer to fore go the consummation of horse flesh are PETA sympathizers."

Not eating it and designating special rights for horses are two different things.

60,000 nation wide? I've been there, I've ask them, I've seen all the horses ... they pick them up...they prepare them for adoption...these horses are being adopted. They also put the ill ones down, if necessary.

“It’s a dirty little secret, that doesn’t benefit the city of Kaufman, the state of Texas or the United States,” said Kaufman mayor Paula Bacon

The real dirty little secret is that because of irresponsible horse owners there are nearly 100,000 unwanted horses per year in the United States that have to be dealt with. I am not a fan of horse slaughter and I am a horse owner and lover of horses. Reality is that there has to be something credible in place to deal with the unwanted horses before I see stopping horse slaughter as a realistic option.

Groups fighting horse slaughter in the US would have more credibility if they would come up with a plan complete with funding to deal with unwanted horses. It's pretty easy to just say you are against horse slaughter- how many horses have you rescued and what plan do you have to feed and care for all the unwanted horses? That is the big question I have.

The french cafes in paris serve a dish that is ground up horsemeat - RAW with a raw egg cracked on top by the waiter.

All I could say was ewwwwww.

Horses are considered to be "noble", pigs and cattle are not.

Else knights and cavalry would have ridden pigs and oxen into battle. Pigs are very tenacious fighters when they have a stake in the outcome. And oxen can endure grave injury, while still striving.

"I've been there, I've ask them, I've seen all the horses ..."

You've been where? You've seen a market flooded with thousands of horses, with nowhere to go and someone adopted them all out?

I have seen the humane society rescue a few horses from stupid owners. But thousands? I haven't seen that, where did you see it? When was this?

I appreciate the information, but, I use a detox program that works well enough for me...I prefer that to having dead flesh decaying in my digestive system...but, then again, my being a vegetarian is about much more than what an omnivore diet does to my body.

After all we all have to die for some reason or other, if it is a little extra toxin build up for me, as I said, "So be it."

One clinical nutritionist says one thing, another says something different.

I make no effort to convert anyone else to vegetarianism...it's just a personal choice for me, that is all.

You know my opinion is that it ought to be each owners decision and like in all animal areas we should be focusing on humane issues. I really think Congress out to stay out of this.

I am sure the Indians see Americans eating cows the same way these "people" sneer in contempt at other cultures.

Same as the muslims and their weird anti pig thing.

"Why? We slaughter other animals for food. What's the difference?"

You're obviously not a horse person. For those of us who are, it's a form of cannibalism. Do you eat dog? Some people do...

Do you eat pork? Some people do and pigs are a lot more intelligent than horses.

We do the same with beef; beef tartare. My husband adores it, but I consider it cow sushi.
