A cruel fate awaits these horses at the Kaufman slaughterhouse.

[It's images hard to ease from your mind so beware.]
From the Alamo to the open range, the horse is permanently woven into the fabric of Texas.
A cruel fate awaits these horses at the Kaufman slaughterhouse.
But this symbol of the west is being slaughtered by the thousands here in Texas, only to end up on the dinner tables of Europe.
Next week, Congress could change that and for residents of one Texas town it cant be soon enough.
In the shadows of a great American symbol, a great American icon quietly begins to stir. A nearby dumpster and a vulture circling above hint at the gruesome fate that awaits.
And so begins another day at the Dallas Crown Plant in Kaufman, Texas.
Its a dirty little secret, that doesnt benefit the city of Kaufman, the state of Texas or the United States, said Kaufman mayor Paula Bacon.
Americans think there are laws to protect horses. They have no idea that three foreign-owned slaughterhouses, not American-owned, are operating in this country, two in Texas, and killing 100,000 American horses.

Pigs are intelligent and companionable, too. Uh, pass the bacon, please.
SPCA will take a horse any day of the week, care for them and find them a good home. They'll not send them to the slaughter house for disposal.
If there were, it would be Hud. Heh.
The Italians love horse meat too and display it at their open markets. It has a slick appearance that reminds me of liver.
Good information.
Well...so be it?!?!?
I once read that Nathan Bedford Forrest's horse, which had been grazing in the front yard of Forrest's home in the years following the war- suddenly attacked a group of curiosity seekers that approached the property.
The group was composed of Union cavalrymen, who had wandered close to the property- curious about Forrest.
Don't know if it's true or not, but I got a chuckle out of it.
Not where I come from. They're near impossible to place with SPCA. Last year, I had to dispose of a herd of more than a dozen we had to take away from an irresponsible horse owner. It took nearly an act of congress to place them, then they were just auctioned off to cover expenses.
Who knows where they ended up?
In northern Nevada, the abandoned horses are eating off the range forage and denuding the land. People just drive out into the desert and drop them off.

Yeah, wouldn't want to see that.... ok for cows to be slaughtered like that and served on your table... but, god forbid, its dogs or horses.
Hypocrites!
The spca can handle an estimated 60,000 horses per year that will flood the market? And find them all suitable homes? Wow, most of the rescue places around me have had the same 10 or so horses for many years because no one wants lame, sick, dangerous or old horses.
Not all who prefer to fore go the consummation of horse flesh are PETA sympathizers.
The objection to slaughtering horses is purely emotion-based.
Heck, the horses are going to die eventually, anyway, and then they will be fed to dogs. Might as well get some steaks out of them.
(I would mention that I would love to try whale meat, but I would probably get flamed.)
Nothing will change. But at least some folks will feel they did something good.
Unfortunately, feeling good about something is plenty of reason to involve the government for too many people.
We owe Horses a better legacy than the slaughterhouse.
The hoses in question Must Be killed anyway.
A fair amount of horses have to be destroyed because they are violent, and injure or kill other animals. These creatures have to be put down - like a pit bull that can kill instantly with one great kick.
There are horses with injuries and congenital defects to expensive to treat. these are going to be put down.
Horses are expensive and slaughter recoups some of the loss a breeder or rancher has on a bad horse.
So this knee jerk reaction by people who have never lived around horses will result in Fewer, not more horses in the United States, because the price of raising them has been raised, with no increase in reward.
Maybe Freepers should read what ranchers and horse breeders say too - not just go along with the PITA crowd.
(This from a guy who ate raw octopus tentacles. Yum!)
I'll venture a guess. It was probably standing there with a blank expression on its face, maybe chewing on a piece of grass and swatting flies with its tail.
That's what makes them so tasty!
Are they more tender raw?
