Death Comes To Galactica

Ronald D. Moore, executive producer of SCI FI Channel's original series Battlestar Galactica, told fans that the upcoming third season of the hit SF series could see some fatalities among the characters. "Oh, there're some changes in the air," Moore said at the 64th World Science Fiction Convention, or WorldCon, in Anaheim, Calif., over the weekend. "We're going to lose some people this year. Not all of our friends are going to make it all the way." Moore declined to be specific, but said that the show's writers have finished breaking the story arc for the end of the upcoming third season.

Moore added that the upcoming season 2.5 DVD set will include a special 90-minute version of the episode "Pegasus," which ran only 60 minutes in the original broadcast. In addition, fresh material in the form of specially filmed "webisodes," Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance, will air on SCIFI.COM's SCI FI Pulse broadband network twice weekly, starting Sept. 5. The two- or three-minute shorts will serve as a lead-in to the new season and, although not essential to the plot, will enhance the viewing experience.

Moore was joined at WorldCon by executive producer Mark Verheiden, supervising producer Michael Taylor, story editor Anne Cofell Saunders, producers David Weddle and Bradley Thompson and SCIFI.COM senior vice president Craig Engler in screening a trailer for and talking about the upcoming season.

When asked whether the show was still true to his initial vision, Moore said he felt it was on track, but that there had been surprises along the way, from both writers and actors, that made both the storyline and the characters richer.

"One of the great things about writing for Ron is you do feel empowered to try things, and it doesn't have to be ... what was in the story outline," Weddle said. "I'm sure many of you remember in season two, where Callie shoots Boomer. That was never in an outline. That wasn't a planned moment. ... [Writer] Toni Graphia called Brad [Thompson] and [me] one day and said, 'You know, I think I want Callie to shoot Boomer.'"

Moore agreed: "There's nothing like reading a script and being surprised," he said of his reaction to the change. "It's the experience of watching the show." Season three of Battlestar Galactica begins airing Oct. 6. Galactica will air Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT

Kevin, can you put me on the ping list? Also, when does season 2.5 come out on DVD? Does anyone know if there will be an entire season two package in one DVD set, or will they remain split between 2.0 and 2.5?

I don't care where the arrow of Apollo lands, considering his recent weight gain and transition to whiny git. Give me back the jaded, dry wit Apollo with the fuzzy- unexpressed- feelings only for his Dad and Starbuck.

They are talking about the changes they've made in their five-year story arc, Callie shooting Boomer, etc. - correct me if I'm wrong, but some of the supporting characters weren't even supposed to live this far - Helo was going to last for an episode or two, among others.

Nah, she stays. Good bye Col Tighe, Chief, Dualla & Helo. Anyone beyond that (since Cylons are clones there's no killing them off) includes Adama, Roslyn, Starbuck, Apollo and they are the core of the story.

When Starbuck dies, so does my interest in the show.

I've never given a show more of a chance to catch my interest than this one, and it just doesn't connect with me. The art direction was intriguing until I found out that the producers weren't trying to make a point by having everything look so much like Earth design, it was just cheaper that way. I don't like drama that is afraid to be grim, but this show is relentlessly monotonous. I am not asking for humor, I'm asking for texture. And I don't care how hot anyone says that Scorpius-in-Crichton's-head chick is, she looks like a female impersonator. The eps I've watched have been dull as dirt, so I gave up.

Having said all that, I'm glad the show exists because it may very well be a wedge into the childish SF shows we've seen so far, and give an opportunity for more adult-themed SF in the future. This show has proven that one can make a weekly series that doesn't end each episode with a little banter and chuckles from the cast, and a long-running storyline that actually strays from the initial concept. (Though I've been told season 2's ending and it seems like a real mistake to me. Also, the couple of hardcore fans I know have been really disappointed in the second half of season 2.)

The idiots at Sci-fi need to stop farting around with WRESTLING and other lame shows and put more Sci-fi like Galactica on their rotation.

Bringing back Firefly/Serenity as a series would be a great start.

You and seven other fans. ;-)

Actually, I never did get into the series, but thought the first movie had at least some entertainment value.
