The ***Official*** Weekend Singles Thread (Aug. 25-27)

Back to School

Well, it's that time of year. We're finally throwing away Fourth of July leftovers in our refrigerators; the stores are starting to put out Christmas decorations; and school is starting. (Okay, the stores don't have Christmas decorations up yet, but complaining about how early holiday decorating starts is everyone's pet peeve.) For lack of a better seasonal topic, this week's singles' thread topic will be back-to-school. We want to talk about your school experiences in general and back-to-school experiences in particular.

We'd like people to share any memories that they have of going back to school. Please feel free to post anything that comes to mind when you think of this topic.

Here are some questions to kick us off.

Does back-to-school this year have any special meaning to you? Are you taking any kind of classes in the fall semester or quarter? If so, what are you taking and why are you taking it? How do you think you'll do? How close are you finishing whatever schooling you're doing? Do you have children in school?

When you think of going back to school, do you think of experiences you had as a child, as a teenager, or as a college student? Were you one of those people who looked forward to new friends and new challenges or were you one of those people who hated to lose the carefree days of summer?

What did you wear to school? Were you a jeans and T-shirt kind of person or did you wear the trendiest fashions? When you started back to school in the fall, were cool, crisp days just ahead or was the weather going to continue to be hot for a few more months?

Whom did you hang out with? The jocks? The artsy crowd? The nerds?

Did you go to football games in the fall? basketball games in the winter? Did you go to your prom or formal dance? If you didn't go to these kinds of events, what did you do instead?

What was the most popular song in the year that you graduated?

What was your favorite subject and why? Who were your favorite teachers and why?

If you are heading back to school and have any subjects that scare you, please let us know. Within Free Republic in general and within this group, there are some very intelligent, very educated people. If there's some subject that could be a problem for you, maybe we can help.

So true. If they don't like my lifestyle and ways of life, so be it. Somebody is out there for me. I like a good BBQ on the weekends. Beer and NASCAR just go together. I like holding my new nephew and teaching him new computer hacking skills ;)

Barbara Anderson .. a tall and drop-dead gorgeous nordic blonde .. Well ... she was in third grade anyway ... and I couldn't wait for fourth grade to begin so I could day-dream and lust after her (I didn't know none of this stuff then .. I was in love .. only after adulthood did I realize my innocence was really perversion ...siggghhhhh )

And the day arrived !

I was going to see Barbara Anderson again .. after all those weeks of waiting.

I was assigned my seat, and .. my last name beginning with Arch ... I knew I would once again sit behind Barbara Anderson .. with the long blonde hair ....
except
I was seated in the first seat, first row.

The unthinkable had happened .. the impossible .. Barbara had moved and would never again bless my eyeballs with her beauty.

I was crushed.

To this day I am affected by that third grade introduction to my heart and emotions .. to this day I am influenced by Barbara Anderson's blonde beauty ..

I married a red-head.

Great story!

I have a similar one, but it originates in the first grade. He was Roger, a freckle-faced lad who not only sat across the aisle fom me in class, but lived just two-doors down. I'll never forget Halloween night, when he came to my door in that Batman costume--I nearly lept off the couch in my rapt excitement. My crush on him lasted all the way through Elementary School. I felt we were destined to be together, someday.

We lost track of each other in junior high and beyond. When I came home from college after the second or third year, I asked a friend what had become of him.

"Oh, that Roger," she replied. "He and his boyfriend are living in Baltimore now."

I sure know how to pick 'em. Story of my life.

Thread "attendance" has been a little light this summer, hasn't it?

It's ok--I got over it a long time ago.

Now, the guy who left me to join a monastery--him I'm still in therapy for. ;-)

Trying to hold it in!

Don't worry. My Mom had TWO boyfriends before she met my Dad that are now gay (not with each other, but I mean separately).

I was an avionics mechanic in the Army. I wasn't very good in the practical areas; but I was #2 in the AIT class (Then-hubby was 1st).
