NFL to discuss Gumbel remarks
Future with network up in air after harsh criticism

NEW YORK (AP) -- The job status of Bryant Gumbel, scheduled to be the play-by-play broadcaster on the eight late-season games on the NFL's in-house network, could be the subject of a discussion by NFL officials after Gumbel's suggestion that Paul Tagliabue show his successor "where he keeps Gene Upshaw's leash."
Tagliabue said Monday that incoming commissioner Roger Goodell and Steve Bornstein, who runs the NFL Network, will discuss the remarks after Goodell takes office Sept. 1.
Gumbel addressed his closing remarks on HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel last Tuesday to Goodell.
"Before he cleans out his office," Gumbel said. "Have Paul Tagliabue show you where he keeps Gene Upshaw's leash. By making the docile head of the players union his personal pet, your predecessor has kept the peace without giving players the kind of guarantees other pros take for granted. Try to make sure no one competent ever replaces Upshaw on your watch."
Tagliabue's response: "What Gumbel said about Gene Upshaw and our owners is about as irresponsible as anything I've heard in a long time."
Upshaw did not immediately return a call placed by The Associated Press.
However, a number of owners have said that they thought they had given away too much to the union in a last-minute six-year contract extension that added almost a billion dollars in the league's contribution to the players.
And Upshaw told the AP several weeks ago that he was able to get more from the owners than he had agreed to just a few days before the owners finally agreed on the new deal.

That was a pretty stupid thing to say. But hey - to quote the great and magnificent Bryant Gumbel - or was it Pissant Dumbell, who cares anyway, - "What a f.....g idiot!"
Bryant Gumbel should be mowing other people's lawns in the Hamptons.
To the left the unions must always be at war with the evil capitalists.
It's nice listening to a game when the announcers know the names of every one of your team's players.
I hope you're right. I know his profile has been diminishing, but the fact is that he is still gainfully employed (despite the impressive amount of cr*p he's pulled over the years). I just don't think that the NFL wants to be the one to pull the plug on him. Not with the annual MSM stories coming out about the lack of minority representation in upper management/high profile jobs in the league.
Actually the annual sports diversity report just came out and the NFL got a B and was labeled the most diverse of the major sports (really small story on ESPN, you know how much the MSM loves to pick up news that praises rich people). And if the NFL cans him he'll still have his HBO job. It'll all come down to what Gene thinks.
They brought back Dierdoff as well? My radio is going to get a work out this year!
This guy is an arrogant jerk, always has been. He will play the race card on this one.
This can't be true. Leftists aren't racists, dammit. |
I know I'm getting a new radio before football season. It figures to be heavily-used as the quality of TV announce teams continues to decline (sound muted on Theeseman and company as I type).
You're right about that. My preference is listening to Brad Shamm and Babe Laughenberg doing Dallas Cowboys games on Sirius Radio.
I think I need a new radio as well -- cannot take Theisman at all! Always have liked MNF but not with this group of announcers.
I remember this jerk when I lived in Utah and BYU was doing really good with their basketball team for once, I think they were headed to the conference play offs, and this jerk called BYU "Bo-Diddly teck"
Well that did it, you know who runs that State and it isn't the RATS nor is it anyone other than the Mormoms, and he was gone....I don't know where he went, but he was no longer on Good Morning America, or any other channel.
Now his brother Greg, is a great guy....he is good in sports, but for them to hire this Bryan jerk is beyond me...hope there are enough people who write the NFL headquarters and protest....I don't want to listen to his nasal whining again...
He is an a hole but on this he speaks truth
Every now and then he'll try to "keep it real" that's why he makes those idiotic remarks.
Are you kidding? Collinsworth rocks as an analyst. He's the best player or coach to become an analyst since Madden himself.
Troy Aikman is better than Collinsworth, and on par with Madden.
When he's *on*, he's as good as any analyst, ever.
Pains me to say that as a Packer fan. But as a football fan, I can't deny it.
Same with the Steelers, although we sure miss Myron Cope the current group does well!!!!
One thing that makes the NFL America's most popular sport is the fact that the minimum salary is actually attainable by ordinary folks pursuing other ventures. Put it that much farther out of reach and I suspect popularity, and the overall general well-being of the league and its players, will decline.
