AN American schoolteacher accused of murdering six-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey in the US in 1996 has told police in Thailand that the girl died accidentally from an overdose of chloroform he administered before raping her. A senior Thai police official said that under questioning in Bangkok, Karr said he had chloroformed the child so he could rape her in the basement of her home in Boulder, Colorado.

“He told us that after sex he realised he had accidentally killed her,” said General Suwat Tumrongsiskul, director of immigration police. “He also told us that they loved each other. She was 'his' beauty queen.”

Well, they are the norm for non-residents. He had an apartment and may well have had his own internet connection but I doubt he was tracked either way. I expect he used a web based email client like Yahoo.

I don't think he was being secretive about his location - I did not see anything in the reports that indicated that. There would be lots of ways to find him if he was, like airline bookings. If they suspected he was in Thailand then the feds would have requested the Thais to go through their records. Foreigners are required to register with Thai immigration if staying more than 90 days. Hotels and even apartments have to submit a similar form on any foreigners staying with them although small apartments may not (and will be fined if caught).

I think the ransom note is one of the more interesting aspects of the case.
For example:

Having absorbed all the tidbits of info/misinfo out there the past two days, my off-all-the-walls & ceiling take is that Karr is the father of JonBenet and was in a mutual blackmail situation with the mother, Patsy, who financed his world wide wanderings until she died. Now, with no financial support and probably AIDS, he wants to get to the US for a book deal and treatment.

The authorities probably gathered evidence on Karr without a court order from a judge appointed by Jimmy Carter! They also looked for a Caucasian, and ignored other, Thai people in Thailand, which is "racial profiling." Wait until Human Rights Watch hears about these travesties!

As to how he got in...it is possible he had sneaked in an open door earlier and was hidden away until they went to bed. This may not have been the first time he was in the house...as I recall the family travelled a lot. He could have had a lot of time to familiarize himself with those items, including bank records, check stubs or a letter revealing the amount of the bonus.
