Not fake in the sense that that isnt Castro, but they were not taken at the time they are stated to have been taken. Click on the thumbnails to enlarge the images in this post.
The picture with the news paper is the giveaway. That is indeed a picture of Castro holding a newspaper, but not THAT news paper. Another image of a newspaper has been placed on top of whatever paper Castro was holding in the photo.
Look just under and to the right of the left hand. There are FLESH TONES barely noticeable where there should only be the grey, black, or white tones from newsprint.
Why would there be flesh colored pixels here?
Well, because even with Photoshop, you cannot slide an image under another, even using multiple layers if you start with a complete image.
A replacement newspaper with a feathered edge has been placed on top of the original paper in the photo. It is a very well done fraud, but still a fraud.
You will notice that those flesh colored pixels continue up into the large headline print as well, showing that some of Castros left hand used to be visible before the phony newspaper image was merged on top of it.
Before you say, well, that is just a reflection from a cameras flash bulb, were that the case, wouldnt the effect be seen on the white in Castros jacket? I looked, but did not find pixels of that color anywhere on the jacket.
Next, you can see that there is a difference when you blow up the picture in the texture of the bedspread in the background, again near the left hand.
My (novice) opinion, is that a lot of work was done in that region of the photo to place Castros hand on top of the newspaper image. Notice in this image that there is no flesh tone bleeding in this image of the other hand. If the image is real, why does this effect not span the whole image?
Now a disclaimer: I have been using Photoshop for about 3 weeks as part of an effort to learn how to make web pages. I am NOT a professional at this by any stretch of imagination. If I were better at this, I would have been done 2 hours ago.
I just saw the photo, downloaded it, opened it in Photoshop, and this is what I found.
I think the picture is a fake, and that Castro is long dead.
Generalissimo Francisco Castro is still dead.
Is there any way that you can replace the second photo in the post with the one in #3? I screwed up.
Thanks either way.
I dunno. I've been using Photoshop for almost 10 years. I get your points, but I don't think there's enough here to call it a fake.
To be honest, his thumb interacting with the printed text makes it look real.
I certainly could be wrong, but I cant explain the flesh colored pixels on top of the news print.
Did you use the sharpening filters... unsharp mask maybe? Those will give you those 'halo' effects I see.
You'd be amazed at how stray color creeps into uniform or "white" areas in photographs that you only notice when you zoom in. In fact my experience is that the truly fake looking photos are when there isn't some variation in shades around the edges of flat objects.
He's dead, Jim.
His withered carcass is emitting foul gasses as we speak... six feet under dark, Cuban topsoil!
I believe this picture was taken in 2002. I find it hard to believe he would be wearing the same jacket.
