Just don't send mail to get on the FReeper Book Club list because that list is outdated and on my old PC and I haven't pinged anyone since last summer becuase of that. I didn't even start a Summer Reading Thread. (Plus, I'm clueless as to how to run a Book Club, but I suggested it and someone else said that I should run it because I opened my big mouth and . . . . . . . . . . . what, you're still reading this? scroll down already.)

Sometimes there may be a subject of interest to you that another poster specializes in, like the Middle East. When a post comes up, that poster will send you a message that directs your attention to the article. It is the same process as responding to another poster, only he types your name in the reply area, and instead of a message he types in ping.
Otherwise, other posters that you get to know might also alert you to a subject that they believe you share a mutual interest in, and similarly, instead of giving a comment, they type in the word ping, and it lets you know about the article. I'll demonstrate with another thread in a second.

Um, if Arthur McGowan isn't around tonight, I should offer you some helpful tips.
You see, joining a ping list is like choosing a fraternity or sorority. You have to drink a lot, strip naked, and then do weird things like the Chicken Dance in your local Walmart parking lot.
After that (it must be proved by videotape) the different ping list masters will decide if you are worthy enough for their lists.

Here's an example of how to get on a ping list. Open one of the "Gods, Graves, and Glyphs" threads (anything dealing with archaeology, history, and cultural issues, usually ancient or medieval). Respond to the person who posted the thread with the request, Please put me on your ping list. GGG is a high-volume ping list and for easy reference, often you can find GGG listed under Topics on the sidebar.
