NY/NJ guy going for a week of beach in the Outer Banks. Where do we shop for cigars? Liquor? Food? Is a trip to Kitty Hawk worth it? Places to hear some good music?
Thanks NC Freepers...
NC Ping!
Just got back from there...spent the week of the 4th in Avon. It was beautiful.
All kinds of places to get your stuff, all over the place...you won't have to look that hard. We barbequed every night, and could hear semi-decent live music from our house: no need to go to the club!!!
Down-mode to off while you're there...there is no stress allowed.
Yes, a trip to Kitty Hawk is worth it. Although it was mighty windy when I was there last year. (That's because a hurricane was on its way!)
You can find that stuff everywhere, from supermarkets to little shops. Just got back on Sunday; you'll love it.
We have a lovely house 100 yds off the beach in Duck.
Be careful of the authorities. They have different ways of doing things there than in the US. You can end up in jail for simply being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Thanks...one of the reasons we chose the OBs was that dogs can run on the beach. Our family (three different households) has five dogs...
??
Also, steer clear of Durham.
I meant to write, in the rest of the US.
Freudian slip?
It's always windy there.
It is awesome to stand on the memorial and realize where that small flight has taken us.
My son will be with us and he is NYPD...and, we will always be within the law. Thanks.
Are you going soon? It gets hot there early, so if you need to walk the dogs, do it very early or at dusk. We like to take our dog out during early nightfall. He loves chasing the crabs...he'll grab them and toss them into the air.
We like to stop by Dirty Dick's and pick up steamed crab and then we go to the beach and eat them. It's pretty spicy, great with beer. We have a tradition to do this the first night we're there. Be warned that the restaurants usually have a long wait. We've learned to go to a seafood store and cook at the house. Waiting can be a real pain.
Are you on the Sound side or the Sea side? You might be interested in doing a bit of kayaking. The Sound side has some really great intracoastal kayaking trails.
If you like lighthouses, there's the Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla (pronounced Cuh-RAH-lah) just north of Duck.
If you've got a car, you might want to plan a trip down to Hatteras Lighthouse. You'll pass by Bodie Lighthouse on the way down. If your knees are good (and you're not afraid of heights), I recommend climbing the lighthouses. You'll drive by some really beautiful beaches. If you can tolerate a bit more driving, take the ferry from Hatteras Lighthouse down to Ocracoke Island. Now, you're getting into some really gorgeous beaches.
As for your "spirits" needs, there are drive-through ABC stores.
If you're into a bit of history, cross the big bridge to Manteo to see Elizabethan Gardens. There's the show "The Lost Colony".
Hope this helps.
We were there 15 + years ago all the way to Ocrakoke Island. It was very quiet and laid back. No fancy hotels or resorts. A beautiful region then, although I don't know if it's changed.
Kitty Hawk is ok.
Be sure to check out Jockey's ridge while you are there.
Also the Weeping Radish in Manteo.
Elizabethan Gardens is very nice. As is the NC aquarium.
Avon is nice. been through there.
Duck is yuppified.
