Need computer help.

I just bought my wife a new laptop and have gone wireless with it. My question is this: Is there a way she can access the email account on this computer from her computer? Both computers are running Microsoft Outlook. I will be unable to answer any questions on FR because of the filter at work.

Just configure the second computer to access the email account with the same settings as the original.

KoRn: I'm betting his question concerns having access to the same saved messages, contacts, etc., than to just being able to pull in new mail from the same ISP.

If this is the case, you might want to think about having a shared PST file (set of Outlook folders) on a shared network drive, and have Outlook on each machine open it. As new mail is processed on whichever machine, drag it into a folder in that shared PST.

I would suggest this separate PST approach rather than using the shared PST as the primary folder, so that when the laptop isn't connected to your internal network (i.e. hotel room, work), you're still able to perform normal Outlook operations like retrieving mail, etc.

Just my two cents.

Yes, for such items that would be recommended if not a necessity. Too bad they don't have an Exchange Server at home lol.

And a spare room for the full time administrator.

Typically, In the enterprise there is the regular "Outlook Client" for folks who are logged into the Corporate Network. Then what they do is to enable OWA - Outlook web Access, for folks who want to log into their e-mail remotely. There is also another option where you log into the corporate network from a remote location using a secure VPN - which then allows you to use the "Outlook Client" you have loaded onto your wife's Laptop.

Either way, your wife should be able to access here mail, unless of course the administrators are IT security Nazis and have everything disabled - then, she's SOL.

not sure 'bout outlook....but in outlook express mail = *.dbx & add bk = *.wab.
Copy all those files to a CD & import them to the laptop.

If no CD burner on your machine, upload 'em to a yahoo mail account & download to laptop.

I'd be pretty hesitant to use a shared PST file. What happens when both clients try to write to the file at once? PST files are delicate enough without introducing that kind of stuff to the mix.

In this case, it sounds like only one computer at a time would be being used.

It shouldn't be an issue. When one instance of Outlook has a PST file opened, another can't touch it. In fact, even after you "Close" the PST file, Outlook retains its handle on it. You actually have to close and re-open Outlook to release the handle to the shared file. Very annoying, actually-- and something that bears consideration.

Most ISPs offer a web-mail interface where you can access your e-mail through the (go figure) web.

Try going to http://www.your ISP name here.com and see if there is a web mail option. This is very handy for checking your e-mail while on the road.

This just my little home network. No servers or anything. I just want her to be able to access the saved emails and contacts and calendar etc from this desktop to her laptop.
