We can all agree that Mel Gibson diplayed extreme stupidity, in making anti-semitic comments infront of a stranger. But the intense campaign in the mass media and on this forum to denounce Gibson, is, frankly, ridiculous. Even many on this forum who defended Trent Lott, have been hysterical in their denunciation of Gibson.
Thinking or saying racist or anti-semitic things is a sin. So is engaging in, or thinking about, extra-marital sex. But given man's fallen nature, such things are common.
People normally express their prejudices to close friends or to family members, not to total strangers. Remember Rev. Billy Graham's infamous private conversation with his close friend, Richard Nixon? Gibson is a stupid man, not an evil man.
I believe that, when labelling a person a "racist" or an "anti-semite", we should look at his long-term record in dealing with blacks or Jews. One or two outrageous comments, in my view, should not make the labels stick. Using such a standard, David Duke and Pat Buchanan qualify as anti-semites. Mel Gibson does not.
The ever sensible Rabbi Daniel Lapin cautioned us all to exercise caution, before labelling individuals. In all his life, Gibson has been very respectful in his dealings with Jews.
Liberals are the real racists as they seek to classify everyone into some sort of group (ie. Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, etc.). Conservatives on the other hand just see a fellow human being.
Mel Gibson went beyond odds and made millions (pandering to the right wing Christians as libs would say) by making a Christian movie that did not hold the Jews of Jesus's day in a good light.
They will continue until they crucify Mel. I just wish he didn't hand them the nails.
Being a Jew is more a matter of birth and staying a Jew a matter of faith. Being an Illegal alien in the US is a matter of choice, and the operative word is illegal.
For those that become Jews by conversion, it may be a matter of choice, but it's NOT ILLEGAL! Well, a lot of nutjobs in the ME might consider it illegal, but it's not.
I know that I'm against the illegals in this country, but I've never blamed them for all America's ills. You've been around here long enough to know that most people here blame most of America's ills on libs/dems/socialist/commies/DUmmies.
If the illegals were to leave the US, go back from where they came, and went through the LEGAL process to come here, I would welcome them.
Sorry dude, but you screwed the pooch with that one.
Name one.
Gibson blamed the Jews for the wars. Many Freepers blame illegals for all many of America's ills. Is there a real difference?
Don't look up, a bird might drop one on you.
FWIW, I hope you never sit on a jury.
Please forgive me if I single you out...but this has been said many times on this forum.
IF this is true, then it carries over to Mel's 7 children as well? I don't think so...
We should be thinking about his OWN children and have compassion for them considering they love their father..not to mention the pain they are going through at this time.
I don't expect THEM to go before the cameras and renounce their father's comments. But ohhh, the MSM would eat that up! I DO expect them to love their father unconditionally, and understand he is not infallible.

When Gibson's Crucifixion takes a pause ....He should produce a "Paparazzi II " titled "The ADL".
"Thinking or saying racist or anti-semitic things is a sin
Just curious, did God say this? Who decided that rants are a "sin"?
People rant on me all the time. Call me all sorts of things. Call my mother names too.
Is that a "sin" too?
If God didn't decide this, who did?
Just a question.
I'm happy to see that Gibson has made what appears to be a very sincere apology, not the carefully parsed and generally unrepentant apologies we've seen from Clinton, and many other public figures.
I hope Gibson gets help and conquers his problems with alcohol and with any antisemitism he harbors.
What he did was wrong (both the drunk driving and what he said). However, if he is truly repentant and changes, it should be a mistake he can overcome.
That's a really broad brush stroke, and I reject it completely.
But I don't believe in the bible or gospels or all that other stuff anyway, so I guess the discussion ends on that note.
Thanks for the reply.
You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not kill. And whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment. But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, Thou Fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. -Matthew 5:21-22
Interesting. But again, as I pointed out in an earlier post, I do not believe in the gospels or the bible or other such things that preach hellfire and damnation.
So it's not enough to accept Jesus?
Me. Never. I wish posters wouldn't project.
I saw that after I posted my response. But I do find it interesting that you would ask questions like, "Just curious, did God say this? Who decided that rants are a "sin"?", when you "do not believe in the gospels or the bible or other such things". I'm guessing now, that you really meant those questions to be rhetorical.
Well, put up or shut up again. Name the many Freepers who are blaming illegals for all/many of America's ill.
I'll answer your question when you first back up your accusation.
But you won't, because you can't.
