I'm told by a source intimate with his situation tonight that Mel Gibson "was really on the verge of suicide because he felt he was helpless to alcohol and didn't know what to do about it. That's why he was driving around 90 miles an hour. This was a death wish. If that cop hadn't stopped him, this guy was going to be wrapped around a pole. This is such a bigger issue than 'Will he work again?' This is about his not wanting to live anymore. I've seen what he's gone through and what he's going through. You have to understand the disease of alcoholism. He was back in it. There's no doubt in my mind he was trying to kill himself that night." As for his anti-Semitic slurs during his DUI arrest, I'm told that Gibson doesn't remember saying them. "Why? He had alcoholic blackout syndrome. I don't know a lot about it. I've not had a lot of experience with it. He has some recollection of parts of the eveenings. But he's not denying he said those things, and if anything he's owning up to it. But nobody could verify it. Not even he or his lawyers have seen the police report yet." The insider called Gibson's situation "tragic. It's not about what people are focusing on, understand that. 'This is Mel Gibson. He can do whatever he wants. He has all money in world. He has a wonderful family. He has a wonderful wife.' They're not thinking about the real issue here: alcoholism. Nobody is talking about his alcoholism."
I smell some excreta coming from LA Weekly.
"On my command, unleash the army of PR BS!"
He probably feels more like suicide today than he did before he was pulled over.
I don't understand why he thought he was "f'ed" BEFORE he said all those vile things. Everyone would have easily forgiven him for a DUI arrest.
So, ok, why would he be at this point after his success? What about his vaunted Christianity and movie depicting Christ's last hours (which I never saw)?
How can he go from there to supposedly this?
Who cares?
He was supposedly on the verge of suicide before the succes of the first Lethal Weapon movie also...
Wow another Mel thread.... The guy was not exactly acting like he wanted to live, even by his own hand, let alone messing with police officers.
If they did not know him they might well have shot him.
Now does this make me 'feel' sorry for him NOT.
Jim Beam made me do it!
Wow another Mel thread....
** Yeah...I'm getting a little Mel'd out.
"They're not thinking about the real issue here: alcoholism. Nobody is talking about his alcoholism."
Exactly. More people are concerned about what he may or may not have said. It doesn't matter how rich or famous you are, alcoholism will take you to places you never imagined you would go - suicide is an easy option for many practicing alcoholics. My prayers to Mel and his family.
What stopped him all of his wealthy years from hiring someone to stop him from drinking and driving drunk?
It's not like he lacks the means to keep himself sober if that was a priority.
Isn't there also something you can take that makes you throw up if you drink?
Seems to be a bunch of ways to handle it in his income bracket.
Only in Hollywood. Rich, successful, miserable. :)
You're obviously the exception, but many here--myself included--never hold back when the subject is Patches Kennedy or his father, so I don't think anyone is safe from this kind of talk.
Actually I'm more interested in how this will affect his upcoming movie. I don't care about the personal lives of directors, I care about their craft.
If this was a TV commercial there would be subliminal messages flashing, "You must feel sorry for Mel."
---suicide...helpless...death wish...not wanting to live...kill himself...doesn't remember...alcoholic blackout ...tragic---
The guy got pulled over DUI, acted like a complete a$$hole, and is desperately seeking an exit from his PR hell.
unless one has walked in the shoes... I've seen a lot of drunks, been drunk a lot of times and have regretted witnessing as well as participating in a few of those "you can't take that one back" heated exchanges.... it does happen. I'm not defending his words, but he HAS been working on a lot of things Jewish lately and would seem to be a logical something to lash out about in his state/stupor. JMVHO
---Isn't there also something you can take that makes you throw up if you drink? ---
Antabuse. Makes you turn brigh red and itch, too. :^)
Kennedy comparison: Fat(literally) cat insulation even tho jr cousin thingee admitted problem....the guy who sunk and killed his lover still roams the corridors of power.....
He read .12 when they tested him, so I think it is unlikely (although not impossible) Gibson was in a blackout. A recovering drunk myself, the terrible things I said and did while drinking are explained, not excused.
I'm just grateful I didn't kill anyone while I was out there. I'm grateful he didn't kill anyone, either.
