Savage 111 rifle vs Remington 710 rifle

TOPICS: Outdoors
KEYWORDS: banglist
I'd like opinions from knowledgeable rifle-owners. I'm looking at getting my first hunting type rifle (deer hunting).

I want something inexpensive and I like that both of these models come with a scope, even if it is far from a top quality scope.

I intend on getting .30-06 caliber.

Thanks for all input.

I'd also ask on AR15.com, but the site is down for extended maintenance.

Browning A-bolt...

Available in many calibres and color schemes...

NOT inexpensive.... but dead-on accurate, excellent workmanship and will last mannnnny seasons...
worth the extra bucks...

You don't need a 30-06 for deer hunting, in fact that's more gun than you need unless you plan on using it for larger game also. Having said that, it will do a fine job on whitetail. If you're loooking to save money here you could get something in a smaller caliber for less and get more quality.

I've taken deer with a .22 mag although that's a little small. Maybe a .223 or even a .270? Savage has a reputation for accuracy and reasonable prices. Look at CZ, the czech manufacturer. They make excelent rifles at reasonable prices.

Yeah, I'm looking to keep my initial expenditures to $350. I just looked at a Remington 710 w/scope for $350 and a Savage 111 w/scope @ an outdoor's shop a few hours ago. Liked the look of them both, but I just don't know enough about game hunting rifles to choose between the two and I can't use my AR-15 for hunting in KS...heh

In KS we can't use a rifle caliber smaller than .23 :-( .270 is an idea though. The store I was at had both models in both calibers. What should determine .270 vs .30-06?

Well as with the Savage guy on the radio, I'm sure the rifle has a LOT of pop, but very little stop :)

Go with the Remington :)

I can't really say anything bad about the 30-06. It does the job on anything in North America. I talked to an Alaska hunting guide and asked him how many rifles he had. His answer was one, a 30-06. There's plenty of ammo available and you can select from a wide variety of game loads including something for white tail. In fact, you can't go wrong getting a 30-06. If that's what you want, go for it. I got a .270 because for the type of hunting I do it's a fine rifle and there's less recoil. I don't ever expect to hunt Moose or Grizzly.

In fact, I would suggest you make your decision based on some range time with both types if you can arrange it. The only firm recommendation I would make, no matter which caliber you choose, go with a bolt action.

The Savage is the way to go if you are fixed in this price range. The Savage WILL be more accurate, has far more accessories available and comes with a better, easily adjustable trigger. I also recommend getting a PAST recoil shield if the caliber is the '06 round. Firing just a few rounds off the bench sighting in is enough to develop a fine flinch if you are used to the recoil of an AR.

If cost is a concern, go with the Savage. Accurate as hell, and cheap. Only bad point used to be their trigger. Get it with the accu trigger, or have a gunsmith do a trigger job on it. If you can spend more, go with the A-bolt, or a BAR. If you're hunting in thick woods, consider a Marlin lever action in .30-30. Consider the new model with the 24" barrel that handles the new Hornady ammo if you're shooting out to 150 or more yards.

Have a look at the Howa M-1500 Lightning series. Better trigger pull than the Savage much more accurate than the Remington and you can choose between the Leupold VX1-39x50 scope or the Nikko-Stirling 3-9x40 scope packages.

Howa used to make actions for the Weatherby 1500, S&W 1500 and the Mossberg 1500.Shopping around will get the price down towards the Savage 111 range.

I have a Remington 710 in 30-06. It's a decent gun. However, about 6 months after I purchased it.. I went out and baught a Remington 700 ADL wood stock in 30-06.

Look into the Remington 700... you will spend a little bit more.. but you get a really nice gun. Top it off with a basic Leupold and you can have a nice deer gun for 700-800 dollars!

I swear by my Savage .223 and they consistently make the top rankings for accuracy. Not all that great to look at, but I camoed mine with spray paint anyway. BTW, 3 holes in a dime at 100 yards. I'd go larger for deer.

the Remington's 710 is junk the bolt guide is plastic, the savage 111 is the finer choice. It also comes with a good scope all you need is a trigger job then it is a great gun.

Yeah I bought a Remington 710 in a .270 and what a peice of CRAP!!! The locking device that holds the bolt in broke one year when i was shooting at a buck and the bolt fell out on the ground and the buck got away. Plus the gun is to heavy and the scope doesnt last. I only had the gun 1 year and got rid of it. As far as the Savage what a gun!! I just bought one in a .243 and I love it. Light weight, good price and accurate. Well do the smart thing and go with the Savage. If u want a Remington then spend the extra money to by a Model 700 and thats an EXCELLENT gun, very well built. Well hope this helps...-Tikka
