You don't need a 30-06 for deer hunting, in fact that's more gun than you need unless you plan on using it for larger game also. Having said that, it will do a fine job on whitetail. If you're loooking to save money here you could get something in a smaller caliber for less and get more quality.

I've taken deer with a .22 mag although that's a little small. Maybe a .223 or even a .270? Savage has a reputation for accuracy and reasonable prices. Look at CZ, the czech manufacturer. They make excelent rifles at reasonable prices.

In KS we can't use a rifle caliber smaller than .23 :-( .270 is an idea though. The store I was at had both models in both calibers. What should determine .270 vs .30-06?

i just bought a savage 111, 30-06. im new to the hunt and looking for the best brand and grain of round to deer hunt. im gonna miss the season this year due to a deplyment to iraq, but im trying to get ready for next year. any advise would be extremely helpful
