The Dragonflies Lair~Thread XXIX

My Dragon Fly and Me

If I could be a Dragon Fly
and wing my way through the sky
I would never be shy
just me and my Dragon Fly!

By moonlight we ride the wind
chase the comets tail for fun
by day we would hide from the sun
our fragile wings would come undone

On darkest nights we would use
fireflies as our guide
we would dip and we would glide
through the heavens open wide
and scatter diamonds in the night sky
my Dragon Fly and me...

And we would wing past our lovers
silent in the night...
to kiss their face in our flight
much to their surprise and delight
my Dragon Fly and me in sight...

Such a view do we share
away up here in the air
of breezes soft through our hair
my Dragon Fly and me a pair...

Well, nothing to report. Looks like the new guy has made great strides in reversing his initial bad impression. I'm hoping for a departure date of Sat the 29th.

It's funny, Chinese and Thai cultures are so different that they seem worlds away from each other, but really, it's just a 3 hour flight to Bangkok!

It was right there all along. Just think, that same afternoon I'll be in my hotel in Bangkok!

Today (it's 7am right now) should give us the final verdict. To quote the 8-Ball toy: "All signs point to yes"

A little humor.

Methodist Squirrels

There were four country churches in a small TEXAS town:

The Presbyterian Church , the Baptist Church, the Methodist Church and the Catholic Church. Each church was overrun with pesky squirrels.

One day, the Presbyterian Church called a meeting to decide what to do about the squirrels. After much prayer and consideration they Determined that the squirrels were predestined to be there and they shouldn't interfere with God's divine will.

In the BAPTIST CHURCH the squirrels had taken up habitation in the baptistery. The deacons met and decided to put a cover on the baptistery and drown the squirrels in it. The squirrels escaped somehow and there were twice as many there the next week.

The Catholic group got together and decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God's creation. So, they humanely trapped the Squirrels and set them free a few miles outside of town. Three days later, the squirrels were back

But -- the METHODIST CHURCH came up with the best and most effective solution. They baptized the squirrels and registered them as members of the church. Now they only see them on Christmas and Easter .

On this date in history:

In 1799, during Napoleon Bonaparte's Egyptian campaign, a
French soldier discovered a black basalt slab inscribed with
ancient writing near the town of Rosetta, about 35 miles
north of Alexandria. The Rosetta Stone, as it was called,
held the key to solving the riddle of hieroglyphics, a
long dead written language.

In 1848, "bloomers," a radical departure in women's clothing,
were introduced to the first women's rights convention in
Seneca Falls, N.Y. They were named after Amelia Jenks Bloomer.

In 1911, Pennsylvania became the first U.S. state to pass
laws censoring movies.

In 1918, the end of World War I approached as the German
army began retreating across the Marne River in France.

In 1946, Marilyn Monroe was given her first screen test at
Twentieth Century-Fox Studios. Even without sound, the test
was enough to earn Monroe her first contract.

In 1969, John Fairfax of Britain arrived at Fort Lauderdale,
Fla., to become the first person to row across the Atlantic
alone.

In 1984, U.S. Rep. Geraldine Ferraro, D-N.Y., was chosen as
Walter Mondale's vice presidential running mate at the
Democratic National Convention.

In 1989, a crippled DC-10 jetliner crash-landed in a cornfield
in Sioux City, Iowa. Amazingly, 181 of the 293 people aboard
survived.

In 1990, baseball record holder Pete Rose was sentenced to
five months in prison for tax evasion.

In 1991, nine days of combat between Tamil rebels and Sri
Lankan soldiers left 78 soldiers and 600 rebels dead in the
fiercest fighting since 1983.

In 1993, the Pentagon unveiled its "don't ask, don't tell,
don't pursue" policy toward homosexuals in the U.S. military.

Also in 1993, former U.S. House Postmaster Robert Rota
pleaded guilty to conspiring to embezzle public funds.

In 1994, U.S. President Bill Clinton said he could accept
a healthcare compromise that would cover about 95 percent
of the population. He previously said he would accept
nothing less than universal coverage.

In 1996, the Summer Olympics opened in Atlanta with a
record 197 nations taking part.

In 1997, the IRA declared a cease-fire in its long war to
force Britain out of Northern Ireland.

Also in 1997, Liberia's first peaceful presidential
election following a 7-year civil war was won by Charles
Taylor, a rebel leader with a reputation for brutality.

In 1999, hot weather settled in over the eastern United
States, lasting through the end of the month and causing
at least 200 deaths -- 80 in Illinois alone.

In 2003, leading Shiite Muslim cleric Moqtada Sadr
announced plans in Iraq to form an independent "Islamic
army" and denounced the Iraqi governing council as
illegitimate.

In 2004, Sandy Berger, former national security adviser
to former U.S. President Bill Clinton and campaign
adviser to Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry,
admitted taking classified documents from the National
Archives but said he did so inadvertently.

Also in 2004, a U.S.-conducted poll showed that more than
70 percent of Britons had a negative view of British Prime
Minister Tony Blair.

In 2005, U.S. Appeals Court Judge John Roberts was
nominated by U.S. President George Bush to the U.S.
Supreme Court, replacing the resigned Sandra Day O'Connor.

Also in 2005, North Korea agreed to resume stalled
six-nation talks on its nuclear program in Beijing on
July 26.

Ahh! It's official, they hired bozo! He does turn out to be kind of a snake, but ask me if I care, I'll never see any of them again after Monday!

But they are inviting me to a really formal dinner. I ended everything in the best possible way (which is my MO), no sinking to the lowest common denominator for those who understand they are really only lowering themselves.

As a result, the good vibes are quite nice, even though I have no illusions about the people I'm dining with, still, they can show a degree of class when occasion calls for it and in their accustomed fashion.

I can't believe this is finally done, so Sat. 29th it is! Still have a week to do some Freeping and general relaxing (before I start relaxing for the next six months) so I'm happy to report everything is ending nicely!

Yes I'm quite pleased. I really feel like drinking some whiskey tonight! (although I don't drink anymore: wink wink)

They have this Japanese brand, Suntory, it's actually quite good. Very smooth with a carmely oak finish. I'd say it's on par with Johnie Walker Black Label, and superior to Red Label.

I might play all the Manhattan Transfer songs I got from the Lair and sip a bit of Whiskey-san!

Here's a link to some pictures of one tiny island I like to visit in east Thailand. Nothing much to do there, it's like only 2 sq miles or something, but look at those lovely beaches! (click the pictures for a big, full sized view) Serenity itself!
