Call adds mystery to lacrosse case (DukeLax)
News and Observer ^ | July 12, 2006 | Joseph Neff

Phone use spans time of team party

In the middle of a Duke lacrosse party where a dancer said she was gang-raped for 30 minutes, a call was placed from her cell phone to a Durham escort service.

The 12:26 a.m. call to the service, Centerfold, lasted one minute, according to a copy of her cell phone bill reviewed by The News & Observer. It is unclear whether the call was a request for another job, a cry for help or something else, or even whether the accuser made the call herself.

But the accuser's phone records add some details to the chronology of the March 13 party, a drunken spring break bash that spawned a national controversy.

Neither prosecutors nor defense lawyers would discuss the phone records Tuesday. Neither the accuser nor a second dancer at the party could be reached, nor could representatives of Centerfold. Police Chief Steve Chalmers was out of town; his spokeswoman said he would not discuss the case.

Three players have been charged with first-degree rape, sexual offense and kidnapping: Reade Seligmann, 20, of Essex Fells, N.J.; Collin Finnerty, 19, of Garden City, N.Y.; and Dave Evans, 23, of Bethesda, Md. Lawyers for the players have proclaimed their clients' innocence and said no rape or sex occurred at the house at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd.

District Attorney Mike Nifong, whose handling of the case has undergone national scrutiny, has been adamant that the woman was raped at the party. Nifong has not given a precise timeline of when he thinks an assault occurred.

Mornin' FReepers!!! Just checking in, y'all. Anything new in scandalous Durham? Anybody else quitting in DPD??? There may be cutbacks in 2008 in services -- I'd put my money on that, and I never bet -- okay maybe a lottery ticket now and then when I can remember what day of the week it is. ;-) They all run together now that I'm working 6-7 days a week.

I've done some research this morning. Post 691. A follow up to the discussion Ken H and I had yesterday. See if you can find any flaws in my numbers...

Your stats are INTERESTING. I'm starting to feel more sorry by the minute for the people of Durham if even a 1/4 of what is written on these threads is 1/2 true. I'd be scared to death to send my kid to Duke (sorry Dukies), but it sounds like the kids on campus need to be in counseling or rehab and if that's not the case, they need 24/7 security guards to protect them from the police and citizenry of the fair city. Ugly business from start to finish. Can't say it's much different in my neck of the woods.

Our little burg is cutting back on services and jobs by the minute. Couldn't pass a school bond issue unless they sneak it through. I suspect we weren't the only folks a bit fed up with the way things were being handled. Arresting officer in our son's case was demoted and placed on campus security. I guess he'd screwed up more than our situation.

Hope we can all get a decent crop of officers (and officials next time we have the chance to vote on them) wherever we are in this dear U.S.A. It's starting to remind me of "Ol' Mehico."

Outstanding! Neat combinantion of logic and police procedures. I hope the defense is monitoring this string, such insight should be very helpful.

Jezebelle wrote

Bingo! There it is. Part of her probation is that she MUST submit to drug-testing. When Shelton ID'd her that night, that term, along with others, would have popped up on their local DPD record for her. Shelton was going to take her for a blood draw and she would have had her probation violated because she would have tested positive. That's why she cried rape and that's why she was pissed off at Shelton and didn't want to talk to him anymore. Now, it's previously been reported that blood was drawn at Duke Medical but hasn't been screened yet, OR MAYBE: She WAS mandatorily tested but those test results are actually part of HER OLD CASE and THAT is what Nifong is holding against her, and that's why there is no tox screen associated with the rape case - it's tied to her probation case and Nifong is holding it back as part of the old case against Mangum. So, the defense needs to subpoena that record to see if there is a test there. This certainly would explain the confusion and mystery of what was tested and/or why she wasn't tested as part of the rape case. It would also explain her comments to UNC Medical the next day that she had a whole lot to drink the night before. Very, very interesting. I think we're getting somewhere now

I don't think the Press has a clue. Sadly, neither do many of the citizens who think they're up to snuff. As long as the potholes are filled on the way to and from work and shopping malls, life is good.

I really feel sorry for people who are still as ignorant of what life is becoming in the U.S. as I was. Until it comes up and punches you in the jaw, it's business as usual.

"The people I've come in contact with have really commended me for not getting involved in the media," he said.

There is a differene between "getting inolved in the media" and taking a leadership role.

Had he taken a leadership role, perhaps Nifong would have had a harder time grabbing the spotlight.

It was not just the rape investigation he was absent from.

His city was on the brink of a racial event. The NBP came to town. "Dead man walking" was heard when Seligman went to court.

Who is entrusted to keep the public safe during these times? Not the DA. Not the city manager. Rather the Police Department and Chalmers is the head of the DPD.

I truly do not know enough to make an honest opinion as to whether or not he is getting ready for the fallout or if he washed his hands of the sordid affair.

But it looks as if he is running scared.

More baseball games this weekend. As if my plate is not full, Duke, Israel and watching baseball in the heat.

I'll be in & out checking on both threads.

Many of our cops work various other security jobs. It was always my first guess that the security lady at Kroger's was likely an off-duty or retired cop. (I still think so.)

Has the Kroger guard's name been made public?

Yes. It is Angel Altmon. Scroll down to post 4490 date 3/29/06. The story is from the Herald-Sun but the links are expired. This is from the Eagle Fan Forum at NCCU.

But in an interview Tuesday night, the guard, Angel Altmon, said that once she went to the car and saw the woman, she no longer thought she was intoxicated. In particular, there was no odor of alcohol, Altmon said.

I just love it that the guard's name is "Angel" but we still know little about her. I'm going to guess that she is black (sorry if I offend anyone)....like you could offend a black in Durham.

"Somebody must have slipped her something, because she wasn't drunk," Altmon said. "If she was drunk I would have smelled something."

Oh yeah, Angel, that explains it. /end sarcasm

This is from your link at NCCU. The link to the Herald-Sun article quoted is expired. Compare the police statements with the article that follows--

[Spokesman Cpl. David] Addison said police approached the lacrosse team with the five-page search warrant on March 16, but that all of the members refused to cooperate with the investigation.

The refusal led officials to issue a "non-testimonial" order -- which allows police to threaten suspects with legal consequences if they choose not hand over evidence -- for each player's DNA.

Addison said it was "unfortunate" that police had to go to such lengths, but that the team members "denied participation or knowing anything."

Addison said the team got several chances to cooperate with police and that the non-testimonial order was issued only after the players kept silent.

"We never would have had to do those swabs if they would've cooperated," he said.

Addison said police can't force samples from anyone they believe to be implicated in a crime. But he said that, in this situation, there was "really, really strong physical evidence" that police will be able to compare with DNA results.

The following is from a talkleft.com post quoting a Herald-Sun article (link has expired)--

The Police Department issued a news release Wednesday saying that when police searched the house March 16, the three residents of the house, who were all Duke University lacrosse captains, volunteered to go to Durham Police Substation 2 for interviews, the release said. When the interviews were completed, the three men agreed to go to Duke University Medical Center, where they voluntarily agreed to provide "suspect test kits."
