Call adds mystery to lacrosse case (DukeLax)
News and Observer ^ | July 12, 2006 | Joseph Neff

Phone use spans time of team party

In the middle of a Duke lacrosse party where a dancer said she was gang-raped for 30 minutes, a call was placed from her cell phone to a Durham escort service.

The 12:26 a.m. call to the service, Centerfold, lasted one minute, according to a copy of her cell phone bill reviewed by The News & Observer. It is unclear whether the call was a request for another job, a cry for help or something else, or even whether the accuser made the call herself.

But the accuser's phone records add some details to the chronology of the March 13 party, a drunken spring break bash that spawned a national controversy.

Neither prosecutors nor defense lawyers would discuss the phone records Tuesday. Neither the accuser nor a second dancer at the party could be reached, nor could representatives of Centerfold. Police Chief Steve Chalmers was out of town; his spokeswoman said he would not discuss the case.

Three players have been charged with first-degree rape, sexual offense and kidnapping: Reade Seligmann, 20, of Essex Fells, N.J.; Collin Finnerty, 19, of Garden City, N.Y.; and Dave Evans, 23, of Bethesda, Md. Lawyers for the players have proclaimed their clients' innocence and said no rape or sex occurred at the house at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd.

District Attorney Mike Nifong, whose handling of the case has undergone national scrutiny, has been adamant that the woman was raped at the party. Nifong has not given a precise timeline of when he thinks an assault occurred.

Excellent site. Durham's has an overall crime rate about 3 time that of my County, but Durham's murder rate tracks 30 times higher per 100,000 people! Durham is a nasty town. The city father's are going to love some of these numbers - not.

As I have said until I'm sure everybody here is sick of hearing it, Terry Sanford was both a former FBI agent and Gov. of NC. He would have gotten to the bottom of this in about 2 days and we'd be discussing something else. Brodhead has shown zero leadership and been behind the curve the entire time.

I'm just hoping she stoops to reply to the comments of a little plebe reader. I'd really like to let her have it with the other barrel.

7 Johns and no prossies!! That doesn't make sense. Also what a whimpy article. It looks like Bishop simple took the police blotter and rewrote it.

The prostitute was a female cop, so it makes perfect sense, I think.

And don't forget this from the July 4, 2006 N&O--

It's just Durham that's particularly bad. The rest of the state is no more or less corrupt that any other place you might be.

All 12 women were charged with solicitation and loitering for crimes against nature, the statement said. They are Monica Rae Lopez, 41; Frances Yvonne Watkins, 21; Janita Michelle Cheek, 28; Pansy Viola Gray, 40; Anita Marie Poole, 40; Sandra Denise Braxton, 46; Sonya Denise Rowland, 46; Shatosha Walker, 32; Aretha Denise Johnson, 34; Jewel Nicole Watson, 29; Lisa Raiford, 47; and Robin Renee Starnes, 41.

Let's see that makes 7 out of 12 40 or over and an average age of 34. Guess the young ones were able to outrun the Durham cops!

Right, I think we are both on the same page both here and the CourtTV board on the issue of the photo arrays and what Nifong might claim and what they really were.

Poor Sill. She needs to become a hairdresser or some such vocation with a lot less stress.

Why? She is not very smart. She hangs with her leftist friend and all agree. They consider those who disagree with her benighted red necks. The only stress is that she RARELY has to intereact with us the unwashed on the web.

Right you can either sting johns [or jills] with a fake prostitute or sting prostitutes with fake johns [or jills.] It is good fortune for the police if they happen to stumble into a situation where you can nab both.

Every time I see that picture with the straw-colored hair and the goofy grin I can't help but be reminded of the scarecrow in the "Wizard of Oz". And I inevitably start humming "If I only had a brain."

I posted this at stalag CW as well.

http://www.wral.com/slideshow/news/8856916/detail.html?qs=;s=5;w=764

Note the account of the attack used in the Finnerty search warrant. It was written on 4/18, so it is a later version of events.

Note how it doesn't mention that the dancers went into the bathroom after the broomstick remark. It has them leaving the house together for the car after the broomstick remark.

A huge difference.

It's really odd because it blows a hole in the idea that the AV was incapacitated after the dance by a drug. In this version, the AV just goes out to the car with Nikki after they quit dancing.

Note also that this version references Kim's statement, yet it is at odds with Kim's statement.

"Wellington and Seligmann basically have exactly the same alibi"

Hey, Nifong might as well have indicted George Bush, Karl Rove, and Dick Cheney. Those three have photos, documents, and witnesses to the fact they were not at the Buchanan house; and a DNA exam would prove they never had contact with that woman.

So why is it so obviously absurd to think that they could be guilty, but not similarly absurd to think that Seligman, Finnerty, and Evans could be guilty?

No, but if you go to the Inmate Population Search for the last 24 hours they are on the list. I don't recognize any names.

I guess it's all relative but I thought that part of RS's argument for a lower bail is that the family had to borrow the $400,000 from a friend. I would have thought that a family with the multi millions to make an attractive lawsuit target should have been able to raise it without borrowing it. But you're from Jersey and I bow to your superior local knowledge.
