Call adds mystery to lacrosse case (DukeLax)
News and Observer ^ | July 12, 2006 | Joseph Neff

Phone use spans time of team party

In the middle of a Duke lacrosse party where a dancer said she was gang-raped for 30 minutes, a call was placed from her cell phone to a Durham escort service.

The 12:26 a.m. call to the service, Centerfold, lasted one minute, according to a copy of her cell phone bill reviewed by The News & Observer. It is unclear whether the call was a request for another job, a cry for help or something else, or even whether the accuser made the call herself.

But the accuser's phone records add some details to the chronology of the March 13 party, a drunken spring break bash that spawned a national controversy.

Neither prosecutors nor defense lawyers would discuss the phone records Tuesday. Neither the accuser nor a second dancer at the party could be reached, nor could representatives of Centerfold. Police Chief Steve Chalmers was out of town; his spokeswoman said he would not discuss the case.

Three players have been charged with first-degree rape, sexual offense and kidnapping: Reade Seligmann, 20, of Essex Fells, N.J.; Collin Finnerty, 19, of Garden City, N.Y.; and Dave Evans, 23, of Bethesda, Md. Lawyers for the players have proclaimed their clients' innocence and said no rape or sex occurred at the house at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd.

District Attorney Mike Nifong, whose handling of the case has undergone national scrutiny, has been adamant that the woman was raped at the party. Nifong has not given a precise timeline of when he thinks an assault occurred.

I love the speed trap theory, can I use that one? Something tells me that the pressure being put on the N&O is going to explode soon, either Ms Sill will be gone or forced to start reporting. My husband and kids just vacationed on the Outer banks of NC, he fell in love with the state and asked if I would consider moving there....he is ticked at me right now because I told him I wasn't moving to such a corrupt place...not up for discussion, staying here in my comfortable Sunflower state.

Is she on parole or probation? Making false charges is a crime and would be a violation of either but the person who would make the final decision on whether to charge her is Nifong. And I doubt he will ever admit the charges are false. He has to much invested politically now.

I hadn't seen this GEM from Nifong before:

ABRAMS: Is there anything you know for certain at this point that is not true?

NIFONG: Well, they denied that a sexual assault took place inside that residence, and the position that the state is taking is that that is not a true statement and I would go on to say that none of the other members of the team, other than these three have made statements to the police.

There's an anomaly in Durham county, it appears... Reckon we should advise Ms. Sill?

"But did she come up with these three herself or did she have help? "

I feel certain she had help. The team photos were on the NET. I think she was shown the team photos--with no fillers.
So--learn who the three or four are she is supposed to ID,
and that's it.
The three or four are selected after a bit of Internet (and maybe DUKE) research to find out who they are, if any of them have had previous trouble with the law, etc.
Finnerty is a "bingo!" match because of DC and $$$.
Evans is big $$$.
But maybe the AV doesn't want to go along with this, and just wants it to end, so she's trying to botch things up a bit--and the police actually are forcing her to continue with it and "helping" her to make the right IDs. (my theory only, of course)

I'd say yes. From what I've gathered on these threads, Durham is notorious for its adult entertainment activity. For such a town, the low number of arrests for prostitution sticks out like a sore pe thumb.

Nifong: "The allegation that I've heard that this is all some kind of a setup
is quite an elaborate allegation, and I haven't heard any convincing
circumstances being discussed about not only who would do such
a thing, but why such an elaborate plan would have been discussed.
And whether or not the people that are supposedly involved were
even capable of such an elaborate deception,....."

excerpt from same MSNBC link above.

Wellington and Seligmann basically have exactly the same alibi. They both left right after the very short dance, took a cab to an ATM, went to get food, and went home.

Wellington's alibi is good enough, but Seligmann's is not.

Now, the AV has ID'd Reade, so that's why his alibi is not accepted.

But then you must believe Wellington is lying......

So why accept Wellington's alibi?

Poor Sill. She needs to become a hairdresser or some such vocation with a lot less stress.
