Phone use spans time of team party
In the middle of a Duke lacrosse party where a dancer said she was gang-raped for 30 minutes, a call was placed from her cell phone to a Durham escort service.
The 12:26 a.m. call to the service, Centerfold, lasted one minute, according to a copy of her cell phone bill reviewed by The News & Observer. It is unclear whether the call was a request for another job, a cry for help or something else, or even whether the accuser made the call herself.
But the accuser's phone records add some details to the chronology of the March 13 party, a drunken spring break bash that spawned a national controversy.
Neither prosecutors nor defense lawyers would discuss the phone records Tuesday. Neither the accuser nor a second dancer at the party could be reached, nor could representatives of Centerfold. Police Chief Steve Chalmers was out of town; his spokeswoman said he would not discuss the case.
Three players have been charged with first-degree rape, sexual offense and kidnapping: Reade Seligmann, 20, of Essex Fells, N.J.; Collin Finnerty, 19, of Garden City, N.Y.; and Dave Evans, 23, of Bethesda, Md. Lawyers for the players have proclaimed their clients' innocence and said no rape or sex occurred at the house at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd.
District Attorney Mike Nifong, whose handling of the case has undergone national scrutiny, has been adamant that the woman was raped at the party. Nifong has not given a precise timeline of when he thinks an assault occurred.

It had 2 for the number of suspects, and it listed $2,000 as cash stolen, plus the cell phone info.
I don't think so. But he may be waiting to be bought off by those interested in seeing this case go forward and/or those who want Nifong in for any other reasons.
I'm suggesting that some investigation needs to be done as to who owns all these various escort services, what their political connections are AND what 'other' businesses they're engaged in.
That, and the obvious bit about the dancers showing up late and performing for only about 30 minutes when the agreement was for 2 hours. If it wasn't for the rape cry, Magnum would probably have been found and had the crap beat out of her, either by some members of the team or, more likely, on behalf of her 'employer'.
The only source of information about her condition and whereabouts is her family, and they're a big pack of liars. If she's in a medical facility, the staff there can't reveal it. Woody Vann, Mangum's former attorney, said about two or three weeks ago that he hasn't heard from her recently. Maybe she'll go take a vacation in Aruba and we won't have to hear from her again.
Yeah, well, sounds like discretion isn't a term he's familiar with. It's the better part of valor, I've heard.
I don't think he mishandled it, I just think some people are listed there that are being protected, and it's not because they are necessarily innocent. It's the law.
Nifong may want to pressure Mangum to bow out if he loses on the change of venue, which won't be known until well after the election in November.

Her being "away" has me worried. I guess I'd rest easier if I knew for sure she was being treated somewhere -- not just hasn't been heard from or seen in a few weeks. At least we knew exactly where our son's accuser was (and still do). She won't get within a ten mile radius of him so long as I'm alive.

Reade Seligmann should give serious consideration to starting civil suits against Mangum and any others he can sue by any stretch in his own jurisdiction. Get Mangum to cave on Nifong and his pressuring her, the photo line-up machinations, all of it. She'll turn on Nifong in a heartbeat, and all her testimony goes into the record. She can be asked many more personal, private matters within the context of a civil suit than she can be asked in the criminal case.

Campaign Manager Jackie Brown dumped Nifong for Cheeks. As county commissioner, wouldn't Cheeks still be an insider?

My recent campaign to appear on the November ballot as an unaffiliated candidate for DA was an attempt to breathe some fresh air into the Durham criminal justice system. I regret that I may not now have the opportunity to give Durham voters that option. Our effort fell about 15 percent short of the needed 6,303 signatures, mainly because we started late. However; our volunteers obtained support from more than 5,000 voters (Democrat, Republican and Unaffiliated) in just 10 days. I apologize to our petition supporters and volunteers for not reaching our goal, but I send each of them my heartfelt appreciation for their support. Yet, our experience clearly demonstrated a groundswell of community dissatisfaction with the current personnel and practices in the DA's office. The only current DA ballot entry is the incumbent, who mishandled the start of a very serious case, causing unnecessary community divisiveness and casting serious doubts on his ability to successfully prosecute that case and effectively lead the DA's office. Another potential DA candidate has apparently collected, over a three-week period, over 10,000 signatures; however he has not yet committed to run. Like all who signed either petition, I am tired of politics as usual in Durham. I hope Lewis Cheek will decide soon whether to challenge for DA. If he doesn't run, I intend to submit myself as write-in candidate. Petition supporters have indicated that they want a choice; and isn't that what elections are about?

I think it is a disservice to our young people for them to not be made aware of what's going in relation to "open season on young white boys." Let's look at Reade, Collin and Dave as an example. Had they been made wise to the reverse racism raging in government and academia instead of being spoon-fed the "everyone is treated equally" altruistic pablum taught in white-bread communities across the country, they may have had the street smarts to not let two BLACK women in the house at that hour of the night under those circumstances in the first place.

You NEVER know when something like this will happen. Now they look foolish, for squandering an opportunity. Of course, the GOP in NC is foolish anyway.

I agree with you. As I said in earlier threads, "The rules of engagement have changed." I meant it. We need to teach our children to be aware of their surroundings, and that they are no longer safe in the way in which we were safe when I was young. It's a dangerous world out there, and they need to know it. Rather than lift everyone to a higher standard of living, we have devolved to the law of the jungle and no one in any neighborhood is safe.
The people you come in contact with now are unknown entities, and not everyone comes from the same background. It isn't possible to take everyone at face value. The rules of engagement have changed -- and not for the better.
No, I'm saying the vice squad is corrupt and has been running interference for the industry. The rest of DPD either don't know, or do know and are getting a small cut to shutup or are just looking the other way. If it was widely spread through DPD, I think more Durhamites would know it. I don't ascribe any ethical goal of stamping out prostitution or any other illegal vice to DPD.
My recollection is that there were two cell phone numbers the defense was seeking the records of.
