I respected Zidane's playing throughout the World Cup. I'm sure he had some tough play too but he lost his cool at the last moment by a guy who's modis operandi is to do just that - take out the guy or solicit a reaction for a foul.
It's just sad that Z will be remembered for this behavior in his last game.

Something else happened in there, Materazzi said something and Zidane turned around, came back, and head-butted him.
Zidane disgraced himself and France -- as if France needed any help.

The headbutt was uncalled for. That said if anyone had to get headbutted it might as well have been Materazzi. He is an absolute goon and one of the most thuggish pros in Italy. Some of his tackles at the club level are absurd.

Zidane threw the World Cup away. His team needed him and he let them down. Matterazzi did what he did. Whatever he did - he won. Zidane lost.
Gee, if that's so effective a tactic, I wonder why we don't try it over here? Let's see... how 'bout somebody go up to Ray Lewis at the two minute warning and start dropping some "N-Bombs"? Or give him a titty-twister. Or a double-titty twister.
The guy would single-handedly maim and mangle an entire offense. Legally. And fatally. The next guy to come across the middle would make Darryl Stingley look like Fred Astaire by comparison. Lewis would have made Jack Tatum look like Mr. Freakin' Rogers.
No, Zidane should have taken it out on the Azzurri on the playing field by finishing off a hat trick. He's a chump because he lost his head, instead of channeling his anger into concentrating and focusing his amazing and still unstoppable talent and going to the next level.
Which is what the French still don't get.
