Agreed.
When asked his idea of a perfect game, Pete Rose once said:
By his own standards, I guess that was not a perfect game.
Who cares? It's soccer and it's over.
Now on to real American sports. All-Star Game this week.
I didn't think anyone would remember it. Always puzzled me that Musselman had a career in basketball after that incident.
And no one has mentioned Ohio State COACH Woody Hayes ending his career when he punched the runner who had just scored a TD against his team.
Not to mention the abuse COACH Knight inflicted on all those poor chairs.
When wrestling, you're grounded, ready for an attack. Sure, a head-butt is unexpected, but you're still fairly prepared for it. The Italian wasn't grounded or expecting it at all. In soccer you don't very often get headbutted when just standing there, 50 feet from the ball. There would be no reason why he would be in a wrestling or fighting stance.
I'm small. But I could lay out a NBA player if he was just standing there, unsuspecting and off-balance. If he was grounded, ready for an attack, I'd hardly scratch him.
BTW-I still think the Italians are stupid divers and that Zidane is cool. He just was stupid and let himself get provoked.
Don't know how proper this request is, but I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone who made a dvd copy of the BBC broadcast World Cup Final game contact me.
I made dvd videos of most of the WC games but my recorder conked out midway thru the France Italy finale. Don't you just hate it when that happens? Bad Karma coming after me. If your BBC copy includes the end of broadcast World Cup games highlights with that stirring musical score - then I really would love to hear from you.
While I'm dvd copy trolling - did anyone copy the recent Hampton Court Flower Show on BBC so I can get out of the doghouse for not copying it for the wife ?
You see crap like that "fall" in pro-fake-wrestling.
His weight was on the left foot and all of a sudden that foot is flying through the air.
The fall was acting.
But it was still a red card play though. There's no debate about that.
Seems to me Zidane figured the refs wouldn't be looking and that he could have gotten away with it.
A flat-out lie. Zim charged Pedro; Pedro merely redirected him into the ground. The picture you posted shows Pedro following through with that, NOT following through after punching Zim.
Thanks for the link to the video.
I don't think there is any 'titty twisting' here but something was said, that is for certain. Whatever provoked Zidane, the video makes me think that his short run in front and then turn around indicates that he was provoked enough to 'want to hurt' his opponent. I don't think he turned from additional words said, but rather from the original discussion. Anyway, who knows until we get the actual story from the two players.
The ABC golf fans tuning in were probably shocked at this behavior.
I haven't followed his career, but a player doesn't get to be a captain by acting that way over the years.
Love to know if the Eyetie was actually trying to draw a foul from the guy. One refreshing factoid: most of the Eyetie team seemed to be actual honest-to-God Eyeties, whereas I would be checking ID on the entire "French," squad, all of whom looked like they had their first bowl of bouillabaise last week, if ever.
Now that this craziness is over, we'll have more time for Jerry Springer re-runs.
Well, while it was an accident, I think Clint Malarchuk's injury was clearly the ugliest thing I have ever seen in sports, if not anywhere.
For those unfamiliar, he is a former NHL goalie who, while playing for the Buffalo Sabres in 1989, was hit in the throat by the skate of an opponent in a collision. It sliced open his outer jugular, and he instantly began spilling pools of blood all over the ice.
You can see a video on Youtube, but it is EXTREMELY graphic and not at all for the faint of heart. I'd have to warn you a thousand times over on that, so I'm not posting a link - if you want to see it, you'll have to find it yourself.
It was just stupid. To end your career this way in this situation. But I don't think it was that bad physically. In real football that hit would hardly register. But that is a totally different sport.
