Sonkajarvi, Finland (AHN) - Could you carry your wife 250 meters on your back through an obstacle course? That's what one husband from Estonia did to win his wife's weight in beer, and even set a world record doing it.
Sandra Kullas and Margo Uusorg won the race Saturday with a winning time of 56.9 seconds. They were among 40 couples who competed in the annual race.
The course included pools and hurdles. The men could run or walk while carrying the women on their backs. The championship was being held for the 11th time and evokes the legend of robber Rosvo-Ronkainen who made prospective gang members carry heavy sacks while running through the forest before he would let them join his gang.
Kullas clung to Uusorg's back upside down with her legs around his neck. This is Uusorg's fifth world championship. The couple received laptop computers and 49 kg of beer.
49 KG's of beer. That ain't very much. He must have married a very tiny woman, not even 100 lbs!!!
I can see some potential dilemmas here. You wouldn't want your wife to be so heavy you couldn't carry her but you also want a chance at winning a lot of beer.
Kullas Clung To Uusorg's Back Upside Down With Her Legs Around His Neck Ping
You mean 108 lbs, I think.
Well, the best bet is she's 100lbs and doesn't drink the award. If ya have a fatty, she'd probably outdrink ya.
If ya have a fatty, forget about winning the race.
I must note this for posterity.
I forgot, 1 KG=2.2 LB. Still she is a small girl.
Now if my wife and I had won...
There would be a big party in Warren MI!!!! She's a real woman!!!
Unless they allow rolling.
Thank goodness we're so young or we'd already be confused.
:-)
You know, I've never really been good at any sporting event. It's things like this that lead me to believe I'm really good at a sport that hasn't been invented yet. Like if Joe Montana had been born in the 18th Century.
And people would be awed by your strength! LOL
The future is now! Take your stand! ;-)
(Hey, yeah...what am I really good at that 100 years from now I could rake in loads of cash and bling bling but there's no value to it now? That's thought-provoking...just damn...)
That is hilarious!
he whole thing seems rather sexist. Now it might be more politically correct if my wife could carry me in one of these races. Besides I'm much heavier than my wife.
I've got it! Let's do a ping spreadsheet!
Good to know they have rules.
Rules
The original track in the rough terrain with fences, rocks and brooks has been altered to suit modern conditions. These following rules set by the International Wife Carrying Competition Rules Committee apply:
-The length of the official track is 253.5 meters, and the surface of the track is partially sand, partially grass and partially gravel
-The track has two dry obstacles and a water obstacle, about one meter deep
-The wife to be carried may be your own, the neighbour's or you may have found her farther afield; she must, however, be over 17 years of age
-The minimum weight of the wife to be carried is 49 kilos. If it is less than 49 kilos, the wife will be burdened with such a heavy rucksack that the total weight to be carried is 49 kilos.
-All the participants must have fun
-If a contestant drops his wife that couple will be fined 15 seconds per drop
-The only equipment allowed is a belt worn by the carrier, the carried must wear a helmet.
-The contestants run the race two at a time, so each heat is a contest in itself
-Each contestant takes care of his/her safety and, if deemed necessary, insurance
-The contestants have to pay attention to the instructions given by the organisers of the competition
-There is only one category in the World Championships and the winner is the couple who completes the course in the shortest time
-Also the most entertaining couple, the best costume and the strongest carrier will be awarded a special prize
-Participation fee is 50 euro
