Fashion week: Men in high heels

After years of stifling conservatism, men face a dizzying array of clothing options ranging from cutting-edge sportswear to unisex collections that blur the distinctions between the genders.

French designer Jean Paul Gaultier is largely to thank for these advances. He was the first to show men in skirts and continues to promote an androgynous approach to dressing with his Gaultier To The Power of Two collection, inspired by the perfume of the same name.

Male and female models swaggered out in platform heels in his spring-summer 2007 show Saturday, which drew inspiration from 1970s glam rockers such as David Bowie.

Younger designers added to the sense of freedom running through the second day of the Paris shows.

Kris Van Assche picked up the his 'n hers theme with interchangeable suits, while fellow Belgian designer Raf Simons showed 1980s inspired separates against fragmented video footage of rave parties.

With typically wry humor, Dries Van Noten punctuated his display of monochrome suits with splashy surf-inspired prints.

Men with shaggy mullet hairdos sported hip-hugging pants in bold python patterns or crinkly see-through jackets with a trompe l'oeil denim print. By contrast, their female counterparts wore fluid palazzo pants with shrunken leather bomber jackets.

Although the male models adopted the wedge heels with varying degrees of ease, Gaultier said he could see the look catching on.

"There are things to be challenged and it's always interested me to do that," he told The Associated Press after the show.

"What I show is never a phantasmagoric personal fantasy. It's always because I feel that there are boys who are interested in dressing this way and who can pull it off. I try to fulfill their desires."

It's not my fault, it is not some horrible experiment I am foisting off on Libs, and it is not some hideous prank to make them look even more ridicuylous.

Honest.
