Superman gives up on 'American way'

Screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris have revealed why Superman is no longer fighting for the "American way" in their new movie.

Superman's motto has been to preserve "truth, justice and the American way" ever since he first appeared in Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel's comic book back in 1938.

But the "American way" part has been removed from the new movie 'Superman Returns' because the screenwriters wanted to move the character away from US patriotism.

Instead, Superman - played by Brandon Routh - vows to fight for "truth, justice and all that stuff" in the film and Harris insists it was part of an attempt to make Superman more of an international icon.

"The world has changed. The world is a different place," Harris said.

"The truth is he's an alien. He was sent from another planet. He has landed on the planet Earth, and he is here for everybody. He's an international superhero."

Dougherty added: "We were always hesitant to include the term 'American way' because the meaning of that today is somewhat uncertain.

"The ideal hasn't changed. I think when people say 'American way,' they're actually talking about what the 'American way' meant back in the '40s and '50s, which was something more noble and idealistic."

How stupid. The United States is still the only country on earth people are willing to risk their lives to get to. "The American way" still means something to the rest of the world, even if it means nothing to Hollyweird. This is another movie I won't see, even though I was a fan of Christopher Reeves' "Superman."

I've heard that the new Batwoman comic will portray her as a lesbian.

American patriots need to take the entertainment media back over. As of now, it is an active propoganda campaign against America, and this "Superman" movie is just one more example.

I just got back from the theater and I was relatively pleased with the movie. If it was just judged on the way it is said in the movie I probably wouldn't have been bothered by it but hearing the writer's take on it makes me regret having paid my money to see it.

That's why I"ll save on popcorn over the 4th of July weekend.

They will get the people that would see anything... however they won't get the dollars that are generated by those of us with "discretionary" income that I can choose to use in multiple ways.

The 1978 Superman is one of the most overrated movies ever. Cool opening, pretty Smallville and arctic scenes, but the rest is lots of fake FX and bland dialogue, and a silly villain.

This one is direct sequel, with Superman now having a kid out of wedlock and, from what I've been told from those who've seen it, it's BORING. Superman doesn't have any combat scenes, he's just flying around lifting stuff, basically, though there's one very good action scene.

I have no interest in "reimaginings" which don't even stay true to the essence of the original. And Superman is a not-very-interesting character--too powerful, too bland. And I don't need anymore of this director's special pleading for the gay agenda, which diluted the first two X-Men movies.

Don't go to the movie? Good idea. Don't support Hollywood? Another winner. Drop the phrase, "The American Way". Well that's sort of in the middle. I LIKE the phrase, and it IS a historical part of the Superman genre, but at the same time the movie market now is a global market, and I can understand how they might want to skip a message that interfered with global sales. What i DO NOT Like -- the phrase & All That Stuff. It denigrates. It makes the other two seem small and unimportant -- TRUTH! JUSTICE! and all that stuff?
