Ousted cast member Star Jones Reynolds said Thursday she was told she could "make up a story" about why she was leaving "The View" and her colleagues would have gone along with it.
The news that Reynolds wouldn't have her contract renewed for a 10th year on the daytime talk show exploded this week into a bitter war of words involving show creator Barbara Walters.
Reynolds, appearing Thursday on CNN's "Larry King Live," said she'd been told in April that she wasn't coming back but kept it secret. She revealed it on Tuesday's show, taking Walters and ABC by surprise with the timing.
The truth _ that Reynolds' ABC bosses didn't want her back because her personal popularity was plummeting _ might never have been known without the fight.
"They said you can make up a story," Reynolds said. "The audience didn't deserve for me to make up a story. That's not fair."
Longtime ABC newswoman Walters has confirmed the intended deception, but said it was done to protect Reynolds' reputation and feelings.
ABC said it canned Reynolds immediately after Tuesday's show because her announcement, and an interview with People magazine, took the network by surprise. Walters told The Associated Press that she felt betrayed and ABC said it couldn't trust Reynolds to tell the truth if she remained on the air.
Reynolds said she was "having trouble reconciling" ABC's statement with being told earlier that she could lie about her exit.
Might as well instruct others to do the same.
;-)
good night or morning or whatever
A daytime gabfest for housewives and the unemployed isn't quite the same as network news. Allowing an unwanted colleague the opportunity to save face doesn't strike me as a major sin.
Now she acknowledges how obnoxious she had come to be seen by her network, and at the same time throws dirt on Walters and the network. I can't see how playing the loose cannon will encourage future potential employers to queue up. Perhaps she and Dan Rather can co-host somewhere.
Perhaps she and Dan Rather can co-host somewhere. ---- Mary Mapes perhaps can produce that show.
Walters and her colleagues.
So now Star thinks she can salvage her career by turning whistleblower.
She'll have about the same success as Connie Chung when she turned chanteuse.
Or Dan Rather when he turned typesetting expert.
June has turned out to be one heck of a schadenfreudefesten.
The original Coneheads.
ping
I'd rather watch the grass grow than give a rats ass about any of this!
I thought they were the original croneheads.
ABC Is BUSTED! Can't Be Trusted!
Here's the ironic part: Bryant Gumbel's name became synonymous with being an arrogant jerk after Jane Pauley's departure from the Today show back in the '80s, when Deborah Norville was all but promoted to co-anchor. Some divined the idea that Gumbel was encouraging NBC to push Pauley out the door, although there was never any evidence it was true. Eventually, Norville, vilified as a bubblehead and sneered at for replacing the beloved Pauley, tired of the pressure, and became host of Inside Edition, replacing Bill O'Reilly. Replacing Norville was...Katie Couric. We know how that's ended.
Everybody got that?
Now...what was I saying? Oh, yeah -- Bryant Gumbel got blamed for stabbing Pauley in the back even though he didn't do it. But Baba Wawa -- who announced on national TV that Rosie O'Donnell, who took shots at Star previously, would be joining The Coven...er, View, DID stab Star in the back, is making it crystal clear that she stabbed Star in the back, and that Star should have known her place and shouldn't have acted like she didn't have it coming. That's arrogance Gumbel could only dream of.
Am I taking Star's side? Not really. I don't know enough about her to have an opinion about her either way. I can count on my fingers the number of times I have seen The View, and was shocked that it's been going on for almost a decade.
Gumbel was, is still an obnoxious ass supreme anti-american, NIMBY devotee to the 10th degree, adulterer, smug bastard, I for one applauded when he got the canned. The constant Dubya bashing, vicious conserative, red state snubs and his playing of the race card will never allow him to have anymore credibility to real Americans.Star jumped the shark twice, the wedding fiasco to the closet gay and her vile comments concerning Dubya's manhood, fat pig should wallow in the muck and has now been branded as such
Just say you were fired and go back to oblivion where you belong.
I didn't say Gumbel wasn't a pompous ass. What I said was that he was blamed for Pauley's departure. There was no evidence of that. Jane Pauley, to my knowledge, has not blamed him. Gumbel didn't have anything bad to say about Pauley.
OTOH, Baba Wawa's so ensconced in the MSM establishment, she apparently feels like she can pretty much flip the bird at Star Jones and everyone will raise their middle finger in agreement.
It appears that in some respects, that's just what's happening. Get a load this from the transcript from Jones Reynolds' appearance Thursday night on Larry King Live
KING: After nearly a decade of dish the daytime diva is off "The View" forever. Did she jump or was she pushed? She's here now to take your calls; Star Jones Reynolds exclusive next on LARRY KING LIVE.KING: Good evening. Welcome to another edition of LARRY KING LIVE. We'll say right at the outset that we've been sent a written version of their side of the story from the folks at ABC. We'll get to their points later. And, I spoke at length yesterday with Barbara Walters, who has asked me to quote her liberally throughout this program.
How do you like that? Barbara Walters didn't want to face Star or talk with her on this topic, so she asked her friend Larry King to be a sock puppet for her. Surrre, that's fair.
This is the kind of thing that is widely assumed but is still startling to see in print. She can't be trusted to lie (on cue), therefore she can't be trusted to tell the truth??? Amazing! Brazen.
Then why don't they fire Terry "Sweet Lips" Moran?
