I ate a field roast for dinner last night, because I am a vegetarian and those are the types of things we eat (carnivores often wonder). A field roast sort of tastes like meat and sort of looks like meat--but it's made of three vegetables and a grain, so not really. Still, no bunnies died in its making, except maybe when the underpaid field worker harvested all the carrots to make my roast.
I thought the field roast was the ultimate in meat technology (note: fakin' bacon? Not good technology), until I came across this Wired News story about a professor of meat sciences, naturally, working to grow pork meat from pig stem cells. Mmmmmmh, stem cells. Next on the test tube menu are burgers, sausages and pizza toppings.
The anti stem-cell contingent seems to have overlooked this massive infringement on unborn piglet rights, but the rest of the blogsphere does have a few things to say. Most seem in favor of this potential protein-rich alternative, but some are just a little weirded out. It's interesting that one cause of anxiety is the fact that the food comes from a lab. Splenda and Yellow No. 5, anyone?
Disclaimer: I am not the author of this piece, nor am I promoting this ... stuff. Just couldn't pass up the opportunity to share it with you all ;-)
Yes this vegan is quite the riot isn't she?
Them field roasts are tough to hunt, a real challenge. (They don't usually allow you to bring a rifle into the supermarket.)
What's her problem with Yellow #5 anyway ~
Nuke the da*n bunnies!
A field roast? Sounds a lot like "veggie burgers..."
I never could figure that out. Why do vegetarians try so hard to make food that tastes or looks like meat?
Anyone who thinks "roasts" come from bunnies, probably should stick with veggies!
Where'd that picture go? I guess yellow makes her look more Democrat, HEHE!!
I dont know about you but i could go for a nice big steak right now... oh and a twice backed potato. :)
baked even.
I'm an omnivore, and not in denial thereof, so I don't share any of her problems.
As long as the steak wasn't grown in a test-tube, count me in ;-)
CooL! :) Mmmm Steak.... :D
For the same reason that gay people want to marry.
Gosh, I could have had a V-8 -- but instead, I had something I would enjoy, a glass of milk. And I dunked a windmill cookie into it.
You guys are making me hungry :)
:')
