Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Then world behind and home ahead
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

The typical home wifi box can support 10 or 12 computers behind it before it really starts getting congested. At least for most people.

Comcast's ATTBI network has been undersized and oversold from the beginning and they've never quite caught up.In defense of cable...ours rarely goes out and it's blazing fast, so any network congestion may be regional/local.

I'm looking at Verizon Wireless Broadband. Ahh... that's a different critter. Do they still want a two year committment to get decent pricing?
We're staying away from it, in favor of Cingular's competing product (HSPDA, IIRC) that they're just rolling out. It's better, faster, and will ultimately drive Verizon's product out. Cingular will also let you go month-to-month I think.
I believe that the Verizon WB would be a single-box only connection. While you could theoretically share it out to your other computers, I wouldn't recommend it.
The WB idea is pretty neat, but I think Verizon's going to have their lunch eaten by Cingular. You get a decent 128K to 256K or so connection, everywhere in town that cell signals work and you just don't have to worry about wifi access points. But... outside of cell coverage areas is still no go, and it *really* slows down when you get outside of major metro areas. Our test was in Phoenix, and it worked great, but out in Sedona... it slowed to a dial-up crawl.

Yeah, they still want the two-year commitment. I could have gotten a "free" card with our new phone upgrade. We're not ~too~ unhappy with Comcast. I'm just looking at options for better wireless for the laptop.

I would stay away. IMHO, the two-year commit is because they know they won't keep anybody very long otherwise.

It's only a couple of degrees below that here. Everything is drying up, or getting chewed up by the bugs, or going to seed faster than I can pinch off the blossoms. We need about 8-9 inches of rain to catch up. The way KC weather works we'll probably get caught up all at once. LSA

Well I hate to say it, but I'm gonna have to decline, too. We'll be knee deep in home remodeling at that point getting this home ready to sell. I even checked on flights, but it just isn't gonna work out. I'll be thinking about y'all, though, and I will send back the RSVP so your Mom can get all the paperwork straight!
Maybe we can plan a moot for sometime in 2007, and y'all will have eyes for other people at that point. ;o)

Yeah, we have six computers going all the time around here. We've got the wi-fi connection, and it works great. We're on the town cable. We ditched the TV part of the cable when we got the Dish, but we kept the internet part. We love it cause it's swooft!
