World Cup Scores Only Small Audience

World Cup Scores Only Small Audience
Only 6% Following Tournament Very Closely

Despite a high level of media coverage for the World Cup soccer tournament, three-fourths of Americans (78%) are not following the action very closely if at all. A Rasmussen Reports survey of 1,000 adults found that just 6% are following the tournament very closely.

Nine percent (9%) of men are paying close attention along with 3% of women.

The Super Bowl remains the biggest sport championship in terms of fan appeal. Thirty-five percent (35%) of Americans say it’s their favorite championship to watch. The World Series is the only other championship to reach double digits—12% of adults say it’s their favorite.

One-fourth of all Americans (25%) say they don’t want any sports championships.

Despite the general lack of interest in the World Cup by the US audience, the soccer tournament is more popular than the NBA basketball championship and the NHL’s Stanley Cup hockey title. Both of those events were being held at the same time as the World Cup.

Fourteen percent (14%) of Americans say they played soccer in an organized league at some point in their life.

Fifty-two percent (52%) of Americans believe there is a professional soccer league in the United States (and they’re right).

The survey was conducted before the U.S. soccer team was eliminated. However, few were surprised by the lack of success--just 5% of the nation’s adults thought it was very likely the U.S. team would win the tournament.

The national telephone survey of 1,000 Adults was conducted by Rasmussen Reports June 19-20, 2006. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Major League Soccer which is considered a niche league in America right now will eventually overtake the NBA and the NHL. New stadiums going up everywhere, attendance just as high as NHL or NBA games, it's a given soccer will become popular in the USA eventually.

I thought the World Cup was a sailing thing

You're thinking of the "America's Cup," which is a sailing thing no one but the participants care about.

'Europeans think our baseball is as boring as we think their soccer is. Spaniards think our boxing is as disgusting as we think their bullfighting is.'

Can't speak for the eurolosers, but us Brits think all of your games are dull. Can't understand why a country like the USA can have no national pride when it comes to team sports, instead preferring to stay at home for fear of losing to a foreign team. Doesn't the idea of humiliating countries like Iran, Mexico and France at the game they love most appeal a little bit? ;-)

And what's this 'our Boxing' bit? Boxing like, just about every other sport is a British invention! :D

That was an awesome game. It's nice to see Detroit fans come back to support a very good team.

I was thinking more along the lines of a frosty World Mug filled with a nice, sharp IPA after mowing the front acre.

You need foot/eye coordination which is a lot more difficult than hand-eye coordination. You still need some hand-eye coordination for throw ins and obviously a lot if you are the goalie. Baseball is a LOT safer than soccer as are many, many other sports. Try playing in your local adult league for even one game. I bet you go back home crying to mommy with all your welts and exhaustion.

What a difference from just a few seasons ago when they lost 119 games. If there was any doubt that Leyland is the best manager in baseball, this season pretty much eliminated it.

The Roar is Restored!

I really do hope they make the playoffs, I definitely want to see a RedSox/Tigers series or Yanks/Tigers series.

53 wins 25 losses with a .679 average. Even the sports media has been forced to take notice and acknowledge that the Tigers aren't a fluke.

_____________

Hmmm...I have broken my wrist twice, two concussions, a broken nose, a broken cheekbone, a broken fibia, a torn rotator cuff and three broken toes from playing baseball, little-league to semi-professional.

Have you ever hit, or been hit by, a 95 mile an hour fastball?

BTW...I played intramural soccer in college for two years.

re :Soccer is very popular among the "elitist" crowd in the US. I tried rugby...once. That's tough!.

Its different here, Soccer or as we call it footy is very work class.

Rugby is more upper class.

As the saying goes.

Football is a game for gentlemen played by hooligans, and rugby is a game for hooligans played by gentlemen

Baseball is a LOT safer than soccer as are many, many other sports.

Take a 100MPH fastball to the head or a line drive to the jaw and say that.

America football is a game for gays, every play starts off with one man, the quarterback, with his hands in the center's pelvic area.
The quarterback then throws a "PASS" at another man.
Then all of the men try to get the one with the ball and throw him to the ground so they can jump him.

So true I got hit with a come backer when I was pitching in college, broke 2 ribs and sent me to the hospital for a few days. Now that hurts.

Pitchers worst nightmare. The dreaded come backer.

There's nothing like a line-drive back at your head just after your follow-through.

Oh, yeah...I forgot to list the broken ribs.

I agree, I think they should make it so in the final 40 yards, there is no offsides.

That has to be one of the most dangerous situations in all of sports. A line drive 200 MPH come backer.
