Rowling: Two 'Potter' Characters Will Die

LONDON - Author J.K. Rowling said two characters will die in the last installment of her boy wizard series, and she hinted Harry Potter might not survive either.

"I have never been tempted to kill him off before the final because I've always planned seven books, and I want to finish on seven books," Rowling said on Monday's "Richard and Judy" television show.

"I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who thinks, `Well, I'm gonna kill them off because that means there can be no non-author written sequels. So it will end with me, and after I'm dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character'."

Rowling declined to commit herself about Harry, saying she doesn't want to receive hate mail.

"The last book is not finished. But I'm well into it now. I wrote the final chapter in something like 1990, so I've known exactly how the series is going to end," she said.

Rowling said people are sometimes shocked to hear that she wrote the end of book seven before she had a publisher for the first book in the series.

"The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly. One character got a reprieve. But I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die," she said. "A price has to be paid. We are dealing with pure evil here. They don't target extras do they? They go for the main characters. Well, I do."

Rowling is the richest woman in Britain _ wealthier than even the queen _ with a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine last year at more than $1 billion.

Whatever she writes next, Rowling is sure of one thing: It won't be as successful as Harry Potter.

"I don't think I'm ever going to have anything like Harry again. You just get one like Harry."

Joanne Rowling has repeatedly said that Hermione is based on her and her sister and dropped hints that she sees herself as Hermione. Actually this is a very common angle for an author - the character that seems to be something of a narrator is an avatar for the writer.

Stray thought - Could Harry die at the end of Book 7 in a flash forward of a hundred years or so?

I suspect Dumbledore had Snape make an unbreakable vow.

Yeah, plus he is indebted to Harry for that. Remember when Dumbledore said that Harry sent Voldemort a wizard who is indebted to Harry, when one wizard saves another there is a certain bond between them, which is absolutely what Voldemort wouldn't want, a servant in Harry's debt. He also predicted that there would be a time when Harry would be very glad he saived Pettigrew's life.

I am hoping that Pettigrew will step in front of Harry when Voldemort gives the death curse, giving Harry a chance to kill Voldemort. Hehehe...maniacal laugh...

This would really suck, but what if Nevill killed Voldemort and in doing so, killed Harry at the same time.

Voldemort and Harry seem to be tied together in life and maybe death.

Wormtail has a "life-debt'" to Harry because of the shrieking shack. I've read on other forums the theory that Wormtails silver hand will be the thing to kill Fenrir Greyback....that would be cool.

Well part of the point of that whole discussion is Dumbledore explaining to Harry that prophecies get fulfilled because of the people in the prophecies. Harry might not have been the chosen one but because Voldemort decided Harry is the chosen one, and acted upon that, and to a lesser degree because Harry himself has chosen to act as the chosen one taking on the fight against Voldemort, it caused Harry to be the chosen one. It's all very Greek, the reason Paris brought the destruction of Troy is because Paris' mother had a prophetic dream and his father attempted to circumvent it, which eventually put Paris in a position to award the apple, abduct Helen, and start the Trojan War. Had Priam not acted to circumvent the prophecy he would have circumvented the prophecy, most of the Oracle of Delphi stories have the same structure. Neville could probably have been the chosen one, but Voldemort decided it was Harry, and therefore it is Harry, though Neville could still take part, it's already been established loyalty and love are things Voldemort doesn't understand and is weak against and that Neville is extremely loyal.

That would be awesome! LOL!!

AS, I didn't even think about Greyback. I always assumed the silver hand was for Lupin. Plus, we have Bill with werewolf-like tendencies. I hope we don't lose too many Weasleys!

Snape had made an unbreakable vow to help Malfoy on his mission, at the moment of truth it was obvious that Malfoy was having second thoughts and wasn't going to kill Dumbledore, so Snape did it. Now the question becomes why did all that go down. Dumbledore obviously knew a lot more about what was happening that Harry figured out, Dumbledore is also big on choices and redemption, I think he wanted to give Malfoy every chance he could to not follow in his father's footsteps and thus put Snape on the path to killing him. This ends any questions in Voldemort's camp about Snape's loyalty, keep Malfoy from having problems at home, gives Malfoy a chance to change his path, and opens the door for Dumbledore to take whatever post death (I think he's really dead, and JKR has said that in her universe dead is dead you don't get better from it) path of assistance he can take.

I know, the Weasleys are great people, and Fred and George are hysterical. I am hoping in the next movie, they will leave in their storyline, the pranks would be great on the big screen!!

I'm with you- I cant believe the headmaster had so much faith in Snape, and it was unjustifued.

I hope he comes through in the end and it is shown that it was all a plan to help kill 'you know who'

Yes, but can one make more than one unbreakable vow, assuming they're not mutually contradictory?

I would think that if Voldemort had any doubts about Snape's loyalty, ol' Severus would have been toast. The Dark Lord doesn't seem to be much of a chess player compared to Dumbledore - much more the blunt object. It seems, based on Bellatrix's grilling of Snape at the beginnning of HBP, that Snape and Dumbledore anticipated Voldemort's questions and reactions.

Question for any werewolf experts.

If Greyback is killed, are Lupin and Bill freed from the werewolf curse?

I'm sure one can, but there's something inherrently dirty about the unbreakable vow and I don't see Dumbledore as doing that. Since Dumbledore actually believes in loyalty and love and the basic goodness of most people I think he'd rely more on explaining his view of the situation to Snape and his goals in it and letting Snape do the right thing.

The reason I think Voldie wouldn't just kill Snape outright is that Snape is in a useful position, he's just too useful a tool for Voldie in Dumbledore's inner circle. Voldie doesn't really trust anybody anyway, I just think he trusted Snape less. Voldie isn't a chess player like Dumbledore but he thinks he is, he thinks he's smarter than everybody, thus he would think that Dumbledore is too dumb to detect if Snape is really loyal to Voldie and would think that if it turns out Snape is really loyal to Dumbledore he could handle it.

One of Fred or George will die. Neville will probably die. Ron, once slated for death, will not die.

Harry survives.

When Michael Gambon replaced Harris, I liked him better. He was more animated, more emotional, more interesting. But then I hadn't read much. Now that I've read the 6, I am forced to agree. He's not a good Dumbledore. Rowling stresses over and over how calm and tranquil and almost unearthly Dumbledore is; Gambon doesn't get any of that.

I have an excuse!!!

I have 2 kids, and I've read all the HP books to them.

I *would* have read them anyway, but we don't have to go there . . .

:-)

Here's the prophecy, just for reference...

Well, yes.... But then, what if the prophecy is not about two people, but three?

Who, then, are "either/neither," and who is "the Other?"

Puts a whole new spin on the matter....

Harry and Voldemort and ... Snape?
