It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's a Deadbeat Dad? (New film shows Superman's bastard son)

Is Superman a deadbeat dad? How about a gay icon?

With the opening of director Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" approximately two weeks away, plot details are beginning to leak onto the internet, including that the Man of Steel impregnated, and abandoned, Lois Lane before going on a five-year space mission.

In several fan reviews for the upcoming film, Ain't It Cool News is reporting that, when the Man of Steel returns from his outer space adventure, he finds his beloved Lois is a single mother, in a relationship with Perry White's son. However, the reviews note, the boy soon begins to display "powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men."

The news that the Last Son of Krypton has a son of his own is not sitting well with some fans and creators.

Former "Superman" writer-artist John Byrne, who revitalized the character in 1986, has blasted the film, stating:

I am sick to death of ...finding...that I, and those who think like me, have been wasting our time for the past twenty, thirty, forty years, working on superhero comics. None of the lessons we have tried to teach have sunk in. Superman can desert the Earth. Lois can have a bastard kid. Doesn't matter. Just make it fast and loud and shiny.

Besides issues with Superman's parenting philosophies, other controversies have surrounded the film, including issues regarding the sexuality of both the hero and the actor who plays him.

Several fan sites have speculated that director Singer, a well-known gay rights activist, cast his new Superman, with an unknown closeted gay actor in order to have the actor "come out" during publicity for the film, to provide gay children with a role model.

This rumor has, in part, fueled rumors that the character himself would be gay in the new film, prompting Warner Brothers, the film's producers to issue a denial stating that the character would not be a homosexual. However, the denial does not address the sexuality of the lead actor Brandon "BJ" Routh.

How this controversy affects the box office, if at all, will be revealed when the film opens June 28.

I'm sorry, but I don't see how this movie could be any better than Smallville. Smallville has great writing, great acting, great special effects... and no agenda. It's just good television.

If you really want to get your Superman fix, why waste your time (and money) with this other crap?

Lois Lanehoff: X-ray vision? Can you see through my clothes?

Uberman: Ja! And through his, too. He's a Jew!

Jimmy Olstein: No! No, it's not true! My parents were just very advanced in hygeine, that's all..!

Hitler: Silence! Guard, take this Jew away!

Uberman: No need! I'll drop him off at the camp on my vay to the Eastern front!

LOL. I recall reading that many years ago. Larry Niven is a kookie dude. And I dig that about him.

Anyone see "Crackers"? Ben Savage and Jane Curtain in what was sold as a "zany" comedy about a woman who has just recently been checked out of a mental hospital. And halfway through a predictable, presentable family-ish sitcom premier we geat "Oh, didn't we tell you? His character is gay!"

I'm sick of Hollywood cosying up to me like a prom date, and then going all "Crying Game" on me in an effort to reducate we poor dumb rubes out here in the Midwest.

I don't really care. It just bugs me that they can't leave what were, basically, childrens lit characters well enough alone.

Tell me about it! The next-to-newest, second-string Dr. Who sidekick was a likable RAF captain, and now we find out he switch-hits, with overtones that he might be able to get the Doctor to have a go. There you go, kiddies.

Xmen 2 got too ham-handed on the "coming out of the closet" thing for me, and Ian McKellen is running around flaming all over the place, so I gave a pass on Xmen 3, and decided to do the same for Superman after I saw the retro-gay way they redid his costume.

I'll pass on Singer's films, and stick to Pixar for a while. Singer and McKellen both talked about Xmen being a homosexual parable, and now that he's had success, I expect him to get more blatant with each "outing."

That was a hilarious short story. I'm an incurable Niven fan.

I saw the previews for it some time ago. "The American Way" part was dropped...I don't recall what was said instead.

Smallville has great writing, great acting, great special effects...

"Smallville" is one of my guilty pleasures, too, but, honestly, how can you say it has great writing, acting, and special effects? The effects, maybe, the acting, is good enough, but the writing, for the most part, sucks. If it wasn't for Michael Rosenbaum, no one would bother with that show.

I believe he said "All that stuff."

Yeah, I noticed that, too. But who said that this will be the definitive Superman? Most likely it won't be.

With respect to the "great writing" I think I am referring more to the macro-plot of the interrelation of the characters and evolving Superman mythos. The "monster-of-the-week" parts can be downright silly.

And with respect to the "great acting" I pretty much consider it good acting when I find myself rooting for a character to win, or sad when something bad happens to a character. Anytime I get any level of emotional involvement with a television character, I feel like the character is well acted.

That being said, there are only so many ways Clark can look with forlorned longing at Lana, and her stare back at him with frustrated infatuation.
