Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.
Our FreeRepublic team of 337 members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).
Currently, the team is in 103th place (with 988 active CPUs - 36,400 completed Work Units and more than 6,4 million points).
This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 17 folding threads)

Now it gets really steep. The overtake schedule at current levels of production:
90 - 1 month
80 - 2 months
70 - 4 months
60 - 8 months
50 - 25 months
40 - 60 monthsPerhaps, we usually seem to do better than their predictions. Come August, those numbers are toast.

I was poking into individual stats a little. We have 994 active systems toiling for the team. My CPUs are down a little, but the slowest ones are being replaced this summer with 3.4 ghz AMDs.
We are still generating 40,000 ppd without our friend Klutz's computer labs.
Several folders are also BOINCing (in a nice way) and have systems running both projects.
If we can generate a few additional folders every week in the summer we will be back up to 50,000 ppd, awaiting the explosion that will surely happen in August. We might have 1,400 systems grinding away then.
We now officially appear on the FIRST page of Folding stats for teams. DU has faded into the pack. It may take them three more years just to break into the Top 100.
Expect #99 Monday morning!

I hope to finally get the new computers I was expecting back in March. I am disappointed that the Intel Core 2 Duo (Conroe) Extreme is initially clocked at 2.93GHz on a 1066MHz bus instead of the 3.33GHz 1333MHz bus that was rumored. I will wait on those until the 3.2GHz is released in Q4. The 2.4GHz and 2.66GHz procs look impressive. I may modify my AMD only plan depending on if the retail product performs as well as the prerelease benchmarks suggest. Otherwise I will just buy AMD 2.4GHz AM2 dual cores. I was considering a 2.6GHz but I do not like the odd multiplier DDR2 memory underclock.
"3.4 ghz AMD"
No such animal, do you mean the 3400+ (2.0, 2.2, 2.4GHz) on old socket 754 or new Sempron 3400+ (1.8GHz) on AM2?
The fastest AMD at the moment is the just released AMD Athlon 64 (Windsor) FX-62 2.8GHz AM2 Dual Core which is not yet available at any store that I checked until the 30th, the fastest you can buy is the FX60 (Toledo) Dual Core 2.6GHz or the FX57 2.8GHz (San Diego) single core, both on S939.
All AMD CPUs are listed here: http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/Default.aspx

It will probably be an older Sempron 3400+.
I buy my systems based upon price, never over $300. I can get the older Semprons for that amount, and I am just now seeing faster units in that price range.
I have an AM2 that my son picked up parts for, but I have no idea when I will put it together. I keep hoping that he will magically slap it together one of these days, since he is taking distance ed at college.
Hopefully I will finish my major projects by the 4th of July.

I usually don't spend too much, except on my core group. I need to rebuild my core group so performance is important.
I will know just how much I can afford to spend as soon as I recieve (and pay) my summer tuition bill.

Yes that is the very next thing I mentioned after "30th". I will probably buy an FX60 if the price drops some more, the new AM2 has unimpressive performance improvements. Maybe Revision G will do better.

if the price drops I hear you...I generally only buy "stuff" that is 6 months old...Buying the latest and greatest is a quick way to bankruptcy.

I uninstalled the the Windows XP screensaver version of the program and installed the no-frills console version (Beta). I have it running on two computers now. Not a whole lot seems to be happening. The last line of the dialog box on my main machine reads "Completed 0 out of 50000000 steps <0>." It's been that way for some time, unchanged.
If I bring up the task manager dialog box it shows 98 percent of the CPU usage allocated to FahCore_78.exe. I'm interpeting that to mean the program is doing its thing, humming merrily along, despite the fact that the other dialog box shows 50 million steps still pending, none completed.
I'll add a third machine on Wednesday.
Even though I only came on line with this project 10 days ago with a single machine, I'm already in the top third of all participants in terms of work completed. it looks like the Pareto Principle is vindicated yet again.

Well after about a week and a half I've made it up to number 222 within FR stats. Another 2 weeks and I should cross 200. I don't have the horsepower that some of you do, but I still see myself in the top 50 around September.
